Minimum DirectX version required by K-lite Codec Pack
Hello,
Does K-lite Codec Pack require a minimum DirectX version to install/run properly? Please note, I am only interested in personal computer versions of Windows OS from Windows 7 (Oldest) onwards.
Thank you.

According to the link:- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-install-the-latest-version-of-directx-d1f5ffa5-dae2-246c-91b1-ee1e973ed8c2
- Windows 10 comes with DirectX 11.3 and 12 installed
- Windows 8.1 comes with DirectX 11.2 installed
- Windows 8 comes with DirectX 11.1 installed
- Windows 7 SP1 comes with DirectX 11.1 installed [with Platform Update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (KB2670838)]
- Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11.0 installed
For updating DirectX, as written in the above Microsoft support link:-
- For Windows 10, 8.1 and 8 - DirectX updates are only available through Windows Update
- For Windows 7 SP1 - DirectX 11.1 is available with Platform Update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (KB2670838)
- For Windows 7 - DirectX update is available by installing Windows 7 SP1 and Platform Update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (KB2670838)
*Windows 11 comes with DirectX 12 preinstalled and DirectX updates are available through Windows Update (Source: Normal google search, no official link available)
I would be recommending my customers to install K-lite Code Pack Mega who would have operating system from Windows 7 onwards. I am a little concerned about DirectX installation/updating by ways other than stated in the above official Microsoft support link. Hence, here are some questions:-
Q.1) As the K-lite Codec Pack installer includes the required DirectX files, do I need to check for any kind of DirectX license of the included DirectX files?
Q.2) When I tried installing K-lite Codec Pack Mega in March this year on my new laptop having Windows 10 Pro, I got a prompt from the installer for installing/updating DirectX. Now, I don't remember whether the prompt was for installing the DirectX files already present in the installer or for updating the DirectX to the latest version. Surely, the prompt wouldn't be for installing the 'required' DirectX version as Windows 10 already comes with a minimum DirectX 11.3 which is greater than DirectX 9c.
So, what was the prompt for? (Please note, I didn't get any such prompt while reinstalling K-lite Code Pack Mega 17.9.0 recently - Current DirectX Version is DirectX 12)
If the prompt was for installing the DirectX files and there is no need for checking the DirectX license then I would continue installing the DirectX files.
If the prompt was for updating the DirectX to the latest version then I would select 'No' (if available) as minimum DirectX 11.0 would be installed in Windows 7 (Oldest).
Q.3) The only stand-alone installation available of DirectX at present is DirectX Redist (June 2010) https://www.microsoft.com/en-pk/download/details.aspx?id=8109 which is used for some old games as written and also the DirectX version is 9.29.1974.1, so I think this DirectX installation would also not be required, am I right?
Thank you.

Re: Minimum DirectX version required by K-lite Codec Pack
You do not have to think about anything, not worry about anything, not have to do anything.
Windows also contains older DirectX versions.
The prompt was for using the official Microsoft DirectX Redist. That installs some extra files that are NOT included with Windows. That option is shown only when installing MadVR renderer (included only in Full/Mega), or when you have a damaged DirectX file (but not the case here).
Anyone who ever played a game, will most likely already have that installed. And then it is skipped.
Again, there is nothing you need to do extra to get things working, even on fully fresh OS install.

Re: Minimum DirectX version required by K-lite Codec Pack
Thank you @Admin for your answer.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused, my intention is to simply comply with the terms of service of K-lite Codec Pack and DirectX.
I am just making sure that DirectX installation/update would be free for commercial use. In my case, I just want DirectX to play work-related videos properly. I have already asked this in the post https://codecs.forumotion.net/t4267-use-of-k-lite-codec-pack-mega-and-directx-in-a-commercial-environment#22986 I had received answer "Yes" but was that answer for commercial use of ONLY "K-lite Codec Pack" OR for BOTH "K-lite Codec Pack" and "DirectX" that I don't know. As DirectX is a Microsoft product I think I should ask/confirm on Microsoft forum for an official answer.
I am assuming that there would be no need to check for DirectX license if DirectX updates (for Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 8 ) are available through Windows Update and DirectX updates (for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7) are available through Platform Update and/or Service Pack Installation as there are no agreements to accept before doing so. But I may need to check for DirectX license for offline/web installers. As an example, the DirectX Redist (June 2010) offline installer does show an agreement while installing.
Thank you very much.

Could you please say whether "official Microsoft DirectX Redist" means DirectX Redist (June 2010) in the link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-pk/download/details.aspx?id=8109 or something else. Also does the installer include the "official Microsoft DirectX Redist" files to be installed or will it download and install it?Admin wrote:The prompt was for using the official Microsoft DirectX Redist.

Re: Minimum DirectX version required by K-lite Codec Pack
There is no concern using DirectX on commercial PC. It uses the web-installer version of the redist.
Using K-Lite on a commercially used PC is also totally fine. It is bundling it or redistributing it that isn't allowed without permission.

I think you are referring to the file "dxwebsetup.exe" in this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=35Admin wrote:It uses the web-installer version of the redist.

@Admin Could you just give an acknowledgement for the above post so that there is no ambiguity over the meaning of "the redist" in your sentence "It uses the web-installer version of the redist."
Thank you.
Thank you.
