MPC-HC 1.9.17.21 crashes playing .IFO files from hard disk Empty MPC-HC 1.9.17.21 crashes playing .IFO files from hard disk

Post by Vampyr Sat Dec 04, 2021 11:16 am

Hello,

I'm backing up my DVD collection and I'm having a issue opening the .IFO file from DVDs saved to my HDD.
When opening the .IFO file, MPC-HC stops responding and I eventually have to force quit.
.VOB files play fine, as do all other standard file types.

During my troubleshooting, I've updated all apps and drivers to their most recent versions.

For ripping, I use REDFOX, ANYDVD HD to save the DVD to my HDD in VIDEO_TS folders.
Other players such as VLC and POWERDVD open the files without error.
As a test, I was also able to use MAKEMKV to create a perfect MKV from the IFO file, so the rips appear to be good.

There was a previous thread on these forums back in SEPT 2018 from user "dbminter", who had determined that the problem was the LAV filters, which could be the issue now.

Thank you for any help with this.

Does it also crash if you play the original unripped DVD?

Could you upload one of the ripped folders for me? If that is too large, then you can exclude the large vob files. Then I can try the reproduce your crash.

The original unripped DVD plays perfectly, does not crash at all.
I have uploaded both a full DVD and the same DVD without the large .VOB files.
Thank you for your help!

No problem playing it here. I downloaded the small files and first big vob that contains the begin of the video.
I even tried on both Windows 7 and 10.

First update to new K-Lite 16.6.2 and test if it still crashes.

Then try this standalone build of MPC-HC:
https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases/download/1.9.17.10/MPC-HC.1.9.17.20.x64.zip
This includes a crash reporter, which hopefully is able to catch the "hang".

Does the problem occur with VIDEO_TS.ifo or only with the other ifo files?

Does the path to the DVD folder perhaps contain any Unicode characters or is very long? In that case test if a simple location such as c:\test\video_ts makes any difference.

I have updated to 16.6.2 - still crashes.
I tried the standalone player - still crashes.
Unfortunately, the crash reporter did not load.
I then rebooted and ran the standalone player with admin rights - still crashes and crash reporter will not load.

The problem occurs only with the VIDEO_TS.ifo file. The other ifo files work fine.

I tried copying the VIDEO_TS folder directly to my desktop:
D:\Desktop\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO - still crashes.
No special characters and short path.

I checked Windows event viewer and found this:

The program mpc-hc64.exe version 1.9.17.20 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

If you're able to play the file then obviously the problem is somewhere on my end.
If you can think of anything else I can try, I definitely appreciate your help.

Thanks!

I suspect it may be an issue with the DVD Navigator filter from Windows. That is used in case of the main IFO file. But it is weird that it worked for me with same version of Windows. Maybe region code differences.

I don't know what kind of options AnyDVD offers with regard to modifying the region code stuff. But you could experiment with that.

I'm in the US Region 1.
AnyDVD should be removing the region code.

I've been experimenting with various settings in both MPC-HC and AnyDVD without success.
I installed a couple more media players, MPC-BE and J River and they are also crashing when opening the Video_TS.ifo file.

VLC and PowerDVD 18 both open the file without any problem.

I will continue troubleshooting and if I find a solution, I will report back.

Thanks for your help!

VLC and PowerDVD uses their own DVD Navigator implementation.

Since the original DVD plays fine, you could maybe skip the removal of the basic "protections". Pretty much all apps can bypass those anyway. Some region 1 discs actually contain tricks to detect region code removal and make playback fail.
