Re: VSFilter error
Is it reproducable? If so, can you tell me the name of the video file (and where you downloaded it) so that I can download the same file?
I recommend using the internal subtitle renderer of MPC-HC.

Re: VSFilter error
I'm on Windows10 x64 (latest build).
Using MPC-HC x64.
Using VSFilter.
Error sometimes appear and sometimes do not appear whenever I open an MKV file with a subtitle included inside of it.

Re: VSFilter error
If the error appears for a specific file, does it work without error the second time you open that same file? The developers can only fix the problem if they can reproduce it. If you have a file where it crashes every time, then that information is very important.
Is there a specific reason why you are using VSFilter instead of the internal subtitle renderer?

Re: VSFilter error
The error may appear on any MKV file with a subtitle file (.ass/.ssa) included inside of it.
Thus, it can be reproduced by the developers.
Set "DirectVobSub" to prefer on External Filters tab
or
Select "VSFilter / DirectVobSub" on the Subtitle Renderer on Output tab
I am using VSFilter because it's lighter load to the system and the subtitles are included in the screenshot.

Re: VSFilter error
I obviously already know how to use it. I asked why you use it to verify that you have a valid reason. You can improve performance on the internal one with this setting:
options > subtitles > maximum texture resolution > video
For screenshots you indeed need VSFilter.
Are you using the regular VSFilter (which is maintained by MPC-HC developers) or xy-VSFilter (which does not have active developers)? The x64 version of xy-VSFilter is known to be a bit unstable.
I have tried several files with SSA/ASS subs and I don't get any crashes. So please name a specific file that gives the problem. Something that I can download through a torrent/newsgroup/website. I want to test with the exact same file as you.

Re: VSFilter error
My maximum texture resolution subtitle setting is already set to that.
I am using the VSFilter included in your setup file.
If you want a specific sample of a video that makes the error appear, you can just grab any of the videos provided here http://www.libde265.org/downloads-videos/ because they have softsubs inside the MKV file as well.
I am also experiencing this error on my office laptop which has a Windows 8.1 OS.
I am running Windows 10 on my PC.

Re: VSFilter error
I have tried the two Tears of Steel samples. Both play fine with the VSFilter from 12.0.5. Those files contain SRT subtitles, not SSA/ASS.
Does the error occur immediately when opening a file, or randomly some time during playback?

Re: VSFilter error
It occurs upon opening a file.
Here is what that is happening.

Re: VSFilter error
Still no issues here. I have even enabled the remember file position option, like in your video. I have opened/closed it over 50 times.
Re: VSFilter error
So what seems to be the problem?
I'm already experiencing it on 2 units.
Here's my config, maybe you can try to see what's making this error appear.

Re: VSFilter error
Try the 12.0.7 update. It won't fix the problem, but MPC-HC will show some more details in the error message.
I tried with your settings, but still no crashes here.
Unrelated to this problem, but it is not needed to add anything to external filters. All those filters that you added should already be used automatically.

Re: VSFilter error
It is extremely difficult to find the cause without being able to reproduce the problem. I will try to arrange a special debug version, but it might take a while.
Is there any software installed on both your computers that could possibly be interfering? Something that runs in the background and hooks into Windows functionality. For example virus scanners and other security tools. Monitoring tools. Tools that record the screen. Maybe one of those is the cause.

Re: VSFilter error
I'll check and troubleshoot the laptop in the office later.
I will clean uninstall the programs I have from most recent to oldest install order/sequence.
I have the following programs installed on both units:
• Adobe Products (almost all)
• Camtasia Studio
• HandBrake
• Any Video Converter
• GPAC MP4Box
I have the following programs as portable on both units:
• MKVToolNix
• VAFE
• MiniX264
With this list, do you have any idea on which of these stuff conflict with the VSFilter?

Re: VSFilter error
Update:
I have clean uninstalled everything on my office laptop then did restart, then I installed MPC Mega latest, did set the same settings as before, and the error still appears.
If I remember correctly, this error started appearing starting version 12 something.
If nothing else works, I think the only hope to fix this problem is the debug version that you will try to arrange.

Re: VSFilter error
You can try the older versions:
http://codecguide.com/download_mega_old.htm
None of those applications in your list have any effect on MPC-HC.

Re: VSFilter error
Just to make sure that we are on the same page...
I am using the 64-bit version of MPC-HC.
That's why the error displays ..\DirectVobSub64\vsfilter.dll
I have tried using the 32-bit version of MPC-HC with the same settings, and no error appeared no matter how many times I open a file with a soft subtitle inside of it.
Were you also using the 64-bit version in trying to reproduce the problem?
The VSFilter version included is xy-VSFilter v3.0.0.306 x64 right?
That VSFilter version has a compatibility problem with the latest build of 64-bit MPC-HC that's why it gives an error?

Re: VSFilter error
Two versions of VSFilter are included. By default the normal VSFilter (from MPC-HC project) is used. That is currently version 1.7.10.101. xy-VSFilter 3.0.0.306 is only used if you explicitly select it. I asked before if you were using that, because it is known to have a buggy 64-bit version. xy-VSFilter does not have active development, so change of fixes is very small.
Re: VSFilter error
What do you mean by "normal VSFilter" ?
And where are the two versions you are saying located?
Each of those DirecVobSub folders only contain 1 vsfilter.dll file inside with the same versions.
A 32-bit v3.0.0.306 and a 64-bit v3.0.0.306
1.7.10.101 is the version number of MPC-HC right?
I have sent you my settings file and you have seen that I did explicitly select xy-VSFilter 3.0.0.306 right?
Explicitly selecting it on the External Filters tab?
But then the error also appears even if you don't set DirectVobSub on External Filters tab.
On Output tab, choosing "VSFilter / DirectVobSub" also makes this error appear.
Both settings would still use the vsfilter.dll inside the DirecVobSub64 folder.
The latest version of VSFilter / DirectVobSub is 2.41.322

Re: VSFilter error
You can select the VSFilter version during installation. Both are installed in the same location and same filename. So you can only see which one you have by looking at the version.
Version is similar to MPC-HC because it is part of the same project. It shares code with the internal subtitle renderer of MPC-HC.
Version 2.41.322 is another version. That one comes from MPC-BE project. That is a modified version of MPC-HC.
Here is the latest installer:
http://www.codecguide.com/klcp_beta.htm
xy-VSFilter has been removed in 12.0.8.
