The problem appears to be that it fails to open the file to read the data that is used for the hash.

OK, I downloaded the file again and the log is different now (in different order at least). Maybe I did some mistake before.

Ah, such an easy problem, I should have try that.
The problem is with the incorrect path to the video file. I am not english speeking person and I use czech language special diacritic in folder names. So when the file is in such a folder, subtitles are not working. if I place the file into another folder without special alphabet signs, it works perfectly.
I just wonder why there was no problem in the previous stable version.

I'm returning here to give feedback about my solution for this issue.

I guess my issue was caused by Windows 7. When i started to use Windows 10 everything began to work properly.

This problem was fixed in MPC-HC.

It is not fixed. I am using windows 10 x64 20H2 and K-Lite_Codec_Pack_1595_Full. I have never seen in my life opensubtitles to be working in klitecodecpack (mpchc). Either because I only started using it in last few years or because it never worked.
I tried current version both full and mega. It does not even try to contact opensubtitles server, nothing displayed in Proxifier. Only tries to contact www.podnapisi.net and api.thesubdb.com. And only always finds subtitles on podnapisi. While connection is refused on thesubdb probably because my ip banned or something else unrelated to app. I just installed that new version and removed all old including settings. But it did not even work with any older version ever as far as I remember. Tried changing OS, IP, nothing fixed this. opensubtitles.org and opensubtitles.com work perfectly fine in all my browsers, with and without logging in, with same or different IP.

Same problem here. Using MPC-HC 1.9.13.19 and can't get any subs from opensubtitles, only getting results from podnapisi. I AM logged in with opensubitles credentials in the setup section of the MPC-HC. The website downloads work fine.

I just tested and OpenSubtitles is working here.

Oh, where did you test it, it still doesn't work on my PC (Win 7 x64). The ping is ok tho:

But it just doesn't work. I've now tried the box media player and it still works from the player (and it works without any credentials, using the default box player, not using the MPC; it works by setting the OpSub api address as a DNS in the box player's net config). But from the PC using MPC it is not working. Thought it might be due to ads.opensubtitles.org being blocked in the hosts file, and have removed the line from the hosts file, still nothing. Then I have removed the blocklist from the hosts completely, still nothing. Is there sth else I could try?

MPC-HC uses https://api.opensubtitles.org
That runs on a different server than the main website. Here it pings to a IPv6 address.

The API requires login, and also has a limit on the amount of daily requests. I don't know the exact limits they use nowadays, but it used to be around 200 I think.

MPC-HC can do a little bit of logging. That should show if there is connection issue.

Ok, thanks, coming below.. just to clarify; I don't know, I don't even use IPv6 in my network neighbourhood as my internet provider don't use it yet. 92.240.234.122 is just something I've been using for years as a DNS in my box player cuz it makes opensubtitles work via the box player. And it still works as of today. Without such DNS it wouldn't work. Also during the same time I've also had and still have the following line added to the PC hosts file:

92.240.234.122 api.opensubtitles.org

It's been all working fine for years, including the MPC-HC on the PC. Now as said, the box OS subs are still working but the PC's MPC-HC are not.

I don't see any OpenSubtitles related entries in the log. So re-enter your credentials in MPC-HC settings.

Hardcoding IP addresses in a host file is just wrong. I don't know the other player that you are using, but it is probably using the website instead of the API.
