No sound with VOB file
Hi All,
I copied a VOB formatted file from a DVD to my harddrive. And am using a .Net 4 app running in 64 bit mode (one which I developed to play video with a WPF MediaElement screen). The picture is perfect but I don't get any sound. Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player both play the file fine including sound. And my app plays lots of other video formats perfectly.
Is there a tweak I need to make in the Klite codec settings for this VOB audio (AC-3)? I believe the .Net WPF MediaElement uses ffdshow decoders.
Also, any idea why the VOB file will not play at all (no video or audio) when I try to play it direct from the DVD disk? I only plays after it is copied to my harddrive.
Thanks for any suggestions.
System:
Windows 7 Home SP1 (64 bit),
onboard sound card (Realtek High Def Audio)
K-Lite Codec Pack 64bit - version 6.2.0
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (32bit) - version 8.7.0
FFDSHOW 64bit audio decoder - AC-3 set to libavcodec
MediaInfo for the target VOB file.

Re: No sound with VOB file
If playback works in MPC and WMP, then there is little help I can provide. But since both are 32-bit apps, you should also test with 64-bit GraphStudio from the pack.
Audio plays now. Thanks

Thank you. I got it to play the audio.
Yes, the VOB file does play in the x64 GraphStudio.
Solution:
In ffdshow audio decoder configuration (x64) -- DirectShow control options
UNcheck the option for "Use ffdshow only in"
Aparently that was preventing .Net from getting access to this audio filter.
-------------------------------
However, I still can't get the file to play at all direct from the DVD disk. I have to copy the VOB file to my harddrive to get it to play. I assume the copy is a an exact bit for bit copy (file sizes are exactly the same). The only apparent difference is that the DVD file is marked ReadOnly.

Re: No sound with VOB file
That is the whitelist function of ffdshow, which is normally off by default.
The difference with playback directly from DVD might be that Microsoft´s source filter recognizes it as located in a DVD file structure, which may activate certain copyright protection checks. Test with a single vob file burned on a DVD to see if it still happens. The Codec Tweak Tool allows you to configure a different preferred splitter.

Re: No sound with VOB file
Yup, I think you are right -- Might be a Windows OS hook preventing the play on a DVD formatted disk. I wrote the file onto a rewriteable DVD formatted as a file system disk and my app plays it fine.
I tried both the LAV and Haali splitters. Both work fine with the VOB file on my harddrive, but will not play the file on the DVD disk.
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. I'm gonna try one of the .Net forums. Maybe someone has cracked this issue before. If I find out anything interesting, I'll report it back here.
