MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
I am running Windows Vista, and have just downloaded the K Lite codec pack to enable me to edit MP4 videos in Windows Movie Maker. The MP4 files now play fine in Windows Media Player, but when I import them into Movie Maker it treats them as audio files not video. How do I sort this problem out?

Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
I am not sure how Movie Maker decides whether a file is audio or video.
Check the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4
It should contain a string value named PerceivedType with value video

How do I do this? I tried typing
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4
into command prompt, but get a message saying
The system cannot find the path specified.

Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
Run "regedit.exe" to start the Registry Editor program. There you can view and edit registry keys.
Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
Under .MP4 I get the following:
Name, Type, Data
(Default), REG_SZ, MP4_auto_file
Content Type, REG_SZ, video/mpeg
PerceivedType, REG_SZ, video

Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
That is all correct.
Are you sure the files are identified as audio, and not just giving a black screen as video? This may help if the latter is the case:
Movie Maker menu -> Tools -> Options -> Compatibility -> enable "ffdshow video decoder"

That's sorted it, I've ticked the box and everything works fine now. Many thanks for your help.

Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
My problem is with 3gp
taken on a sony xperia x10 mini mobile phone
my windows movie maker (wmm) v2012 is as up to date as you can get, updated today. windows 7 ultimate also up to date
they play with windows media player, and media player classic
they don't play (neither sound nor audio) in wmm
wmm no longer has tools-options it does have options but nothing thence about compatibility
regedit has 3gp as video
thanks

Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
If you upload a sample file for me, then I can try if I can get it to import in Windows Live Movie Maker somehow.

Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
This should solve it:
ffdshow audio decoder > Codecs > set AMR to disabled
LAV Audio decoder > Formats > uncheck AMR
ffdshow audio decoder > Codecs > set AMR to disabled
LAV Audio decoder > Formats > uncheck AMR
Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
half way solved, which is pretty good going; I have no idea how you knew to try this. fiddle with audio codecs and the result is that the video plays, erm wtf?
Half way because the video shows properly, but the audio is silent

Re: MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker
I can only suggest to convert the video to a different format.
Handbrake is a good free conversion tool.
