MPC-HC freezes when I click File in the menu

When I click File in the menu, MPC-HC freezes completely and becomes unresponsive for ca 20s, regardless of whether I open a clip or just start the program. Seems to work fine when I click anything else.
I have tried re-installing it (the newest version as of 12th july 2024) - no change.
I use Windows 10 pro. Instead I use SMPlayer and it is okay. Prefer MPC though bc smaller jumps when fast forwarding.
I would appreciate any help.

Options > Player > Disable "Open Disc" menu
