MPC-HC crash after sleep Empty MPC-HC crash after sleep

Post by george_lol Mon Dec 11, 2023 10:36 pm

This just started happening to me recently on Win11 with mpc v17.9.0
When my laptop wakes up after sleep, most of the time now, MPC crashes when I try to play a video - mostly .ts or .mp4.  See attached error message.
The only way to get MPC to run again is reboot.  Other than this everything else meets my needs very well.

If the error message image isn't available, here's the text of the message:
An error has occurred. MPC-HC will close now.
Exception:
ACCESS VIOLATION
Crashing module:
C:\Program Files (x86)\K-Lite Codec Pack\Filters\MPCVR\MpcVideoRenderer64.ax
Offset: 0x7F653, Codebase: 0x7FF9Df680000
The thread 7100 tried to read memory at address 0x4
Please report this crash on our support forum. Then we can investigate why this crash happens and try to fix it.
OK

Just to be clear, you are starting the player fresh, and video was not already running before sleep, right?

If it started recently, then it is likely caused by a bug in the graphics driver or a recent Windows update.

You can use this keyboard shortcut to quickly restart the graphics driver without having the reboot the system:
Winkey+Ctrl+Shift+B

Yes, fresh start on the player. Earlier today I paused a video and let the system go to sleep. After wake the video played for a little bit but then crashed. Also, since my post I changed an ASUS routine that deals with color rendition. ASUS has a whole bunch of s/w that comes with the computer that modifies some parameters that windows and other apps normally control (and can still modify). ASUS considers the s/w enhancements geared to it's specific h/w. I've also noted that I have 2 GPUs, one Intel, the other nvidia Geforce RTX. As best I can determine MPC uses the the Intel GPU but maybe ASUS shifts it to nvidia, I have no way of knowing as I don't want to know the details. I had my day back in the 1970's developing mainframe (think IBM 360/370) operating system s/w and communications systems.
Thanks for the shortcut key!
Ps. AI scares me.

If you want to keep it running during sleep:
Options > Advanced > ReloadAfterLongPause = 0
This will reload the video after resuming from hibernate. That often helps avoid problems. Video will restart at same position.

It should use the Intel one by default. You can adjust that here if desired:
Windows Settings > Display > Advanced
There you can add individual apps and specify which GPU it should default to.

Please do this so I get more detailed crash information:
1) Grab this portable version of MPC-HC which includes a crash reporter:
https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases/download/2.1.2.18/MPC-HC.2.1.2.59.x64.zip
2) Unzip it somewhere. Don't replace the K-Lite version.
3) Grab this version of MPC Video Renderer:
https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases/download/2.1.2/mpcvr_0.7.0.2148.zip
4) In this case, you can replace the .ax files from K-Lite.
This specific version/build of MPCVR is required for the crash reporter.
5) Use the portable MPC-HC and manually open a file (or drag&drop onto it)
6) When it crashes, the crash reporter should open a page on drdump.com website with crash details. Copy the link here so I can see stacktrace.

Btw, does the driver restart help with the crash?
