Subtitles not loading

I am trying to use an SRT file along with a video file (extension not necessary). Whenever I get the new version, I always tell it to allow subtitles. When I open the video file, I try to open the subtitle file along with it, but nothing ever happens. What am I doing wrong? Or how can I open the subtitle track? I hit "Play" then go down to "subtitle track" and nothing is visible for the subtitle track. Or it lets me open it and then doesn't show any subtitles

Name them like this:
example.avi
example.srt

MPC-HC options > Playback > Output

Make sure that a renderer is selected that is compatible with subtitles. Also select internal subtitle renderer.
