Subtitle bugs report for Mega ver. 17.6.8 & 17.6.9(Solved)

1.1, internal subtitle renderer with default font type specified to "Microsoft YaHei" loads a .srt format subtitle file (language Simplified Chinese, none font specification), it displays in font "Songti", even when default subtitle function activated, no change happens.
1.2, When it loads a .ass subtitle file with multi-language in both Simplified Chinese (font specified to "Microsoft YaHei") and English (font specified to whatever), the Chinese part will be rendered in font "Songti" while the English part rendered correctly.

This bug happens in both MPC Video Renderer and madVR output.

2, XySubFilter loads a .srt or .ass subtitle file discribed above, it renders only for 1 second (slightly more or less), and then it seems lost the subtitle file or its rendering function, as no subtitle displays with the video. It can be fixed when XySubFilter's "Loading" selected to "Always load" instead of default "Load when needed".

This bug happens with MPC Video Renderer output. In madVR output, XySybFilter renders the subtitle constantly no matter "Always load" or "Load when needed" which is selected.

These 2 bugs don't exist in Mega ver. 17.6.0. So I have rolled back to it.

Expecting these bugs being fixed, and won't happen again.

There is nothing in the player that changes the font. However, when a font does not contain certain characters, then Windows can use a fallback font instead. I don't know why older version worked differently for you. Does the older version still work differently for you now? Because problem might be due to changes in Windows or font file on your computer.

The load option of XySubFilter should only affect its loading. It has no effect on subtitle display once it is loaded.

17.6.6 can't be downloaded, reporting 404 "The requested URL was not found on this server".
17.6.7 downloaded and tested.

the testing bindings and results are:
MPC Video Renderer, internal subtitle renderer - Chinses characters rendered in "Songti"
MPC Video Renderer, XySubFilter - Chinses characters rendered in "Microsoft YaHei"
madVR, internal subtitle renderer - Chinses characters rendered in "Songti"
madVR, XySubFilter - Chinses characters rendered in "Microsoft YaHei"
The subtitle file's internal codepage stored in ANSI, UTF-8, UTF-8 with BOM are tested and found irrelevant.

Please notice that all I reported are in the same system environment. So I don't think it's a character-mismatch fallback problem since ver. 17.6.0 can display the subtitle in "Microsoft YaHei" under MPC Video Renderer and internal subtitle renderer. I think it must be a problem with the internal subtitle renderer.



New findout: when video is loaded (resumed) in the time-ponit should with subtitle displayed, if XySubFilter displays the first line without character outer shadow, then lost the following subtitle. If the first line character is with the correct out shadow, XySubFilter displays the subtitle constantly. No matter under MPC VR ormadVR. So yes, its not a "Load when needed" problem. But ver. 17.6.0 still doesn't have this XySubFilter misrendering problem.

internal subtitle rederer renders Chinese subtitle solution founded:

1, subtitle files must be stored in UTF-8, UTF-8 with BOM, GB2312, or GB18030. ANSI will corrupt the font name when loaded in internal subtitle renderer, which is mostly can be downloaded directly in Chiese laugage internet environment.

2, in the subtitle files, the font name must be specified in Chinese if the font name is displayed in Chinese in the system's font selection window.
for example, "Microsoft YaHei" can be recognised but cannot be loaded correctly, "微软雅黑" will be right.

this didn't happen in ver. 17.6.0, and I noticed that in ver. 17.6.7 and above, the MPC settings window - Subtitle - Default Style added an "OpenType Language" selection,
and the "Character Set" selection changed to "8-bit Character Set".

so I agree it's a fallback font selection problem. I think it's a change made by MPC-HC update and causes the Chinese subtitle font name recognition problem.

Yes for Unicode characters (such as Chinese) you need to use UTF8. In fact, all subtitle files should just always use UTF8. Then they are correct and same on each system.

The new OpenType language option does not have any effect at all unless "freetype" is enabled in advanced options (which is off by default and also not recommended). Freetype is an alternative for Windows GDI font rendering. Freetype is also used when GDI fails to render something, which might have been the case due to your ANSI problem. But with old version you would then have had missing/invisible characters.

Hmm, I need to check the 8-bit character set option. That might be unintentional change. Does setting that back to Default (1) fix the problem?

Just checked, and there have not been any change in default value of 8-bit character set.

the character set option in MPC setting is the "Defalt type" setting, it should only has effect on the subtitle file in .srt format which doesn't have its own font specification. or when the "Default type" is enabled in right mouse menu - Subtitle track, it can overide the character set in other file formats of subtitle files such as .ass, .ssa to selected MPC character set.

the .ass or .ssa file has its own font specification, then wrong character set bindings will corrupt the rendering. this can be checked in the right mouse menu - Subtitle track - Style menu to find out what is actually loaded and recognized.

further findout: if the character set of English content is set to GB2312 in the subtitle file, or the character set option in MPC setting is set to GB2312 and the "Defalt type" is enabled to overide the specification in the subtitle file, the font specification can't be recognized correctly and it falls back to "Songti". Defalut or ASNI character set won't do this.

the most popular Chinese subtitle editing software has only Default, GB2312 and ASNI options, so I just tested these three settings.

so, the better way to keep things right is using UTF-8 to store the subtitle file, Chinese font name if its name is originally displayed in Chinese in the MS Windows system, and set character set to Default, or seperate different languages and specify thier own correct character set bindings in the subtitle files.

or when subtitle font rendering is wrong, check the right mouse menu - Subtitle track - Style, see what font and character set is loaded and change it to what you want it to be in "this" playback session temporarily.

finally, I can upgrade the mega pack to the latest version.
still, expecting further improvement be made to ignor the complex bindings to free up ordinary users.
