MADVR freezes computer 99.9/100 times
Hello, recently I installed the full pack from the k-lite official codec pack page but when I try to open a video it crashes and freezes the computer
Some things to note are that
Since I have to restart my computer every time I try a 'fix' I would really appreciate help with this.
here is my codec log:
let me know if there's any other necessary info
Some things to note are that
- The audio freezes and does that funny thing where It's still playing, but it's the last sound it was making, so it goes something like "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" until I turn the computer off there was one time when the audio kept playing but everything else was still frozen.
- Other thing to note is that this only happens with MadVR as output in DirectShow Video and when opening a file it may take a 0.5 to 2 seconds before it freezes and will never display any actual video just a black screen.
- So far this has only happened without using full screen, but I think it's safe to assume it will happen in full screen too.
- After installing, I was able to actually watch one video with no issues.
- During the first video I was watching I did some changes because I wanted to see the difference in MadVR (I changed the DirectShow output between MadVR and MPC Video Renderer and I also enabled HDR in windows settings)
Since I have to restart my computer every time I try a 'fix' I would really appreciate help with this.

Re: MADVR freezes computer 99.9/100 times
Madvr requires good hardware is you want to see real quality benefits. Laptops like yours are not very powerful. Plus dual graphics systems are always a bit buggy.
My only suggestions:
- Update your graphics drivers.
- Connect laptop to power cord and enable high-performance power profile.
- In Windows settings, go to Display, then Advanced settings. There you can configure which GPU should be used by applications. Select high performance (= NVIDIA) there for MPC-HC.

2 korana:
There should not be any issue with playing video on i7-8550U internal gpu
I would not recommend to turn windows HDR unless you have "HDR monitor" + HDR video stream to play on it
Totally agree with admin, madvr should be used in case you know why you want to use it, there some benefits for sure, but your CPU will be dead
Please make sure you have latest intel video driver, because 22.20.16.4815 is very old. I believe this should fix the problem. Also, pay attention to left bottom MPC window corner, it should say [H/W] during playback.
If you switch to "high performance (= NVIDIA) there for MPC-HC." you might have gpu overheating and fan noise, just keep aneye ear on it
2 Admin:
That is interesting, if I switch from internal intel gpu to nvidia rtx, MPC loads GPU with 50%. When I play the same video on intel GPU it takes only 20%. H/W decoding enabled with MPC VR. And what is more interesting both GPU has x264 and x265 decoding H/W acceleration. Probably it's a stupid nvidia driver fault.

Re: MADVR freezes computer 99.9/100 times
The numbers in task manager can sometimes be misleading.
The NVIDIA GPU is likely running at low clockspeed. So for example 50% usage at 10% speed.
Tools like GPU-Z can show more details.
