HDR stops on first frame in MadVR, freezes with MPC Video Renderer Empty HDR stops on first frame in MadVR, freezes with MPC Video Renderer

When attempting to play anything HDR:
MadVR
  1. Opens in full screen
  2. Darkens the screen
  3. Switches to windowed mode
  4. Displays the first frame
  5. Does not play, as if I had paused (but the play button is pressed)
  6. Allows me to click around the video and see individual frames throughout the file

MPC Video Renderer

  1. Blacks out the screen
  2. Does not respond to input (or if it does, I cannot see because the screen is black)
  3. The only action I can take is press ALT-F4 to kill the task, which works, indicating that MPC has not crashed.

The videos
  • Work fine through Emby on a Sony X900H TV

My system
  • Windows 10 Pro build 19043 (Build 21H1) with all Windows Update optional updates
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
  • ROG Crosshair VII Hero motherboard
  • 32GB RAM
  • nVidia RTX 3090 Founders Edition
  • nVidia Driver 511.65
  • Monitor is an LG CX OLED55CXPUA (supports HDR and Dolby Vision; not HDR+)
  • Monitor connects through a Zeskit Maya 8K 48Gbps Certified 8K HDMI cable
  • Nothing is overclocked
  • Latest BIOS, drivers, and all that jazz
  • K-Lite 1680

What I did

  • madVR settings > rendering > exclusive mode > "how many frame shall be presented in advance" = 1
  • Turned off Focus Assist
  • Tried playing directly off a Blu-Ray directory
  • Tried a random MKV file with Dolby Vision and HDR10

Dolby Vision is not supported yet. Only normal HDR10.

Direct playback of Bluray is also not supported, unless you are using software that removes the AACS content protection layer. For example PasskeyLite or AnyDVD HD.

It looks like switching screen into HDR mode does not work correctly. Test if playback works better when you enable HDR mode in Windows 10 settings.
