Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
Hello,
For the last couple weeks i had extremely high ram usage on explorer.exe I though it was a windows error so I was just restarting it on task manager. I have fresh installed windows and after i used k-lite codec pack mega the issue came back i disabled thumbnails on codec tweak tool and i did not have it for today so i think it is the thumbnails .
Is this a known bug do you need me to supply more information if you can give me what information you need i can supply it. I really like k lite codec and mpc-hc.
Thanks.

Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
Not a known bug. Re-enable thumbnails. Then browse folders with Task manager open so you can monitor memory usage. Maybe a specific file or folder triggers the problem.
The problem could also be a bug in Explorer itself, or in another shell extension, or cloud storage plugins (OneDrive/Dropbox/etc).
In your screenshot I notice "windows command processor" using 98% GPU. Looks suspicious to me. If you don't recognize that, then it could be cryptomining malware.

CMD is gpu mining at idle I am aware of it. Because I have decent gpu I am mining on free time it brings more money than my electric bill so it actually is positive value.
Even after it is closed I realized explorer.exe starts with 50meg ram and then slowly using 900 meg ram thumbnails definately made it worse but it is something else causing it.
Onedrive is uninstalled but i have office 365 and it randomly installs stuff (if just installed teams and i get a pop up). Telemetry and defender is disabled. Windows is a mystery.
I have A LOT of movies in my hdd and windows thumbnails probably doesn't like it.
Thank you.

Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
Thumbnails are small and don't use a lot of memory. Your problem is caused by a memory leak, memory that isn't freed properly after usage.
Considering that I haven't seen any other reports of this problem, the chance is small that it is caused by the thumbnails. Plus the thumbnails are cached by Windows, so Icaros is only called by Explorer to generate a thumb for new files. If Explorer is constantly regenerating thumbs, then enable the option in CTT to let Icaros use a secondary cache.
With ShellExView tool from Nirsoft you can see if you have any other third party shell extensions installed.
Are you perhaps using Windows 11? That had a memory leak bug in Explorer recently. I don't know if Microsoft has fully fixed that already. It would increase memory usage each time you opened a folder.

Thanks for trying to help me even when it is not related to your software.
I used disable icaros button on codec tweak tool already but I opened a heavy video folder and right now there is 19gb ram usage even after i closed the folder the explerer.exe is still using ram.
ShellExView non windows apps are at the top but i do not notice anything do you?

I do not really have much on my pc to be problematic as far as i know.

Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
You can disable those non-windows entries to test if they are the cause. Try disabling IDM and TeraCopy first.
The WinRAR one should be fine.

Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
I have uninstalled irfanview and it looks like my issue has disappeared.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Strange. There wasn't anything related to IrfanView in your shell extensions list.
Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
I use IrfanView from more than 10 years and never had any problems.

Well I was in the folder that did the ram leak and noting happened so i thought it was resolved by removing irfanview but you are right on another folder with a lot of videos ram usage is back. It was not irfanview.
The folder that did it previously cached all thumbnails but it happens on other heavy folders too.

Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
Is the RAM usage still high if you wait a few hours? It might just be using a lot of RAM because you have a lot of free RAM that it can use. It exists to be used! Question is if it frees the RAM when another application needs it. If it does that, then there really isn't a problem or leak. So test if usage drops after starting another memory hungry application or game.
Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
This did not happen after I fresh installed windows but I have plugged in an SD card and it bluescreened so i installed msi ge75 10sf card reader driver and the sd card reader worked fine i also used irfanview before too but there were no ram issue before
today i have seen the ram issue but i removed the realtek driver and my ram usage is normal
it seems like this is an msi or realtek driver bug and windows issue
Without sd card driver i am bluescreening when i plug in an sd card

After i installed the driver i get no bluescreens but i think even though i have no idea how sd card reader driver could do this that driver is messing with explorer.exe
nope false it come back that seemed to be temporary

Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
If you don't install a vendor specific driver, then Windows will use a generic driver from Microsoft for the sd card reader.
Check if there is a BIOS update for your system, and maybe newer chipset drivers.
Your problem is unrelated to the codec pack, so I can't provide much more help.

Evn I got the latest version, but this problem still here, I think this is really a memory leak problem, it take out your memory but never release it, hope they can fix it

Re: Thumbnails use crazy amount of ram
If you read above, it was not fault of the thumbnail plugin.
If your issue is fault of the thumbnailer, then you need to provide files to trigger the problem. Otherwise we can not reproduce or fix.
