If I'm just opening single files for playback it doesn't make sense to see the playlist so I usually just leave it off but It would be convenient if I can automatically have the playlist show if I open a playlist file, or drag and drop multiple files, or use the 'Play with MPC-HC' command from the folder context menu.

There will not be such an option.

But you can press Ctrl+7 to show/hide the playlist.
