Unwanted prism effect on video playback
Hi
I have 4 short videos all shot at the same time (2006) the thumbnail image and playback displays with a 'prism' effect all the way through. I have played back with WMP, and MPC-HC, both players playback with the prism effect. I have a W10 Build 18363, 64 bit laptop, with 8GB RAM. K-Lite codec pack v15.8.9 (Full). Other videos play back in both players without any issues.
Any ideas how I might fix the problem?

I don't know. Can you upload one of those videos?

I clicked your link to "sendpace" and it doesn't work.
I can trim the video and send a few seconds of it, let me know where to, I could share it with you via onedrive...
Or even a screen shot of the thumbnail would be sufficient for you to see what I mean.
Let me know.
Thanks

Re: Unwanted prism effect on video playback
Sorry I made typo, it is https://www.sendspace.com/ but you can use any other host as well.
I need to see the file itself to give a clear answer about why it plays that way.

Re: Unwanted prism effect on video playback
Right-click on the file in Explorer and select MediaInfo. Copy that text here, maybe I can see something in there before you upload.

Re: Unwanted prism effect on video playback
Nothing obvious in the file properties. The video is interlaced, so you could try enabling Yadif software deinterlacing in LAV Video Decoder settings. Probably won't make a difference, but never hurts to test. Normally deinterlacing is done automatically in the video renderer.

I tried as you suggested but no change. Next step? Upload the screen shot to you?

Re: Unwanted prism effect on video playback
The file has decoding errors. It may be a bug in the decoder. It is not something I can fix for you right now. I would need to submit a sample file to the decoder developers. Another possibility is that the files are damaged.
I suggest trying if it plays properly with Quicktime.

Thanks for the suggestion but I have W10 on a PC and from what I can see Quicktime is no longer supported on that platform?
I could submit the smaller of the video files if you think it is worth trying? (312MB)

Re: Unwanted prism effect on video playback
Yes, you can upload sample video.
You should be able to install Quicktime if you right-click on its installer, go to Properties, Compatibility, select Windows 7.

Re: Unwanted prism effect on video playback
I installed Quicktime and opened the video file and it played correctly, no prism effect. Am I missing a codec for use with WMP, VLC, and W10 Films & TV. Thanks very much

Re: Unwanted prism effect on video playback
No, you are not missing a codec. The decoder that is used by MPC/WMP/VLC is an open source decoder from FFmpeg project. It has a bug when decoding your videos. In case of VLC you can not change the decoder. In case of MPC/WMP, thsse might work with a codec from software that was bundled with the Camcorder. I don't know any other free alternatives. In case of Movies&TV there is no codec available at all for this format.
Probably best solution is to use Quicktime.
