Video not playing back after codec install Empty Video not playing back after codec install

Clear description of the problem:
I found an old mov video on a website located at http://www.mesoweb.com/palenque/dig/report/sub9/high.mov

As Quicktime is so old, my browser didn't have the ability to play it, so I downloaded it to my local machine and tried to play it with Windows Media Player. I could see that the video was over 2 minutes long, but it would only play the first 10 seconds, and it would only play the video and no audio.

I figured that I was missing a codec, so I downloaded the K-Lite Codec Mega pack. I used option 9 when I installed it (full install with player, I believe). I believe the only option I changed was that I kept WMP as the default player.

After it finished installing, I ran Media Player Classic and played the file. The entire file played, which was more than the 10 seconds I had earlier, but only the audio played; the screen was completely black.

Windows version: Windows 10 version 2004 (OS Build 19041.572) 64-bit

Codec Pack version: Mega. I downloaded the installer for 15.8.0 Mega and then ran the updater for 15.8.2

Solutions I have already tried:

  • I tried playing the file in WMP again. Same result (audio and black screen).
  • I am working on a laptop, so I tried to see if I have two GPUs to try a different one. I only have one GPU: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620
  • I tried opening two versions of MPC and playing the same file in both applications.
  • I checked the MediaInfo Lite tool to see if the file actually contained a video. It looks like there are 10 videos and 4 audios. I included the information below in a spoiler tag.
  • I then tried playing it in the GraphicStudioNext. To be honest, I don't know how to read what I am seeing, but there are 5 rectangles. The first rectangle has the name of the file and has two arrows coming out of it--one for video and one for audio. Since the audio works, I'm just going to list the video arrow. The video arrow goes to the input of a rectangle that says LAV Video Decoder. The output of that rectangle goes to VMR Input0 of another rectangule labelled Video Renderer. I also used the GraphicStudioNext tool to play the file, and had the same results (audio and black screen).
  • To try to get the file to play on WMP, I installed VP9, AV1, and MPEG-2 codecs from the Windows Store as per the Codec Guide.
  • I renamed the file from high.mov to high.video

Wow, what a strange video. It contains different segments of video in in different formats. It uses some obscure functionality of the MP4 container.

It won't be possible to make this playable properly with WMP or MPC. You should use VLC Player for this file (or Quicktime). That is able to play it somewhat normally but it even behaves a bit weird because it opens two video windows.

Thank you. I see what you mean about VLC having two windows, so I did download QT and it played fine there!

Now how to get it into a format that can be played by modern players! Off to do more research.

Thank you again!

If I remember correctly you can convert with Quicktime. Look in the player menu for a Convert or Export entry.

You can with a pro account. I decided to see what the cost of QT pro would be. When I went to the website from with QT to purchase pro, I received a server not found error.

I appreciate the thought and feedback.

QT is end-of-life, so your probably can't buy it anymore. You could try a keygenerator as a less legal way Wink
