Using Lav codec when steaming videos in a browser??
Can the Lav video and audio decoders be set to activate when viewing Youtube videos in Microsoft Edge or any browser for that matter? They do activate when I play video and audio in, windows media player 12, and mpc-hc in Windows 7.

No, that is not possible. Browsers do not use these (or other) DirectShow codecs. Browsers either use internal decoders, or they use the Media Foundation decoders from Microsoft that are included with Windows. It is not possible to change what they use.
But it is possible to play Youtube videos in MPC-HC.
All you need to do is place youtube-dl.exe in the MPC-HC folder. After that you can open Youtube URLs with MPC-HC (menu > file > open).

Just a note: Despite the name youtube-dl.exe do support a lot of streaming sites in addition to Youtube.

Be great if someone could write a browser that could use the codec. I tried your suggestion but no luck, mpc-hc says "failed to render the file". I do see the lav spliter icon pop-up a couple of times quickly but not the audio or video icons, then the error. Here's my test link https://youtu.be/OMOVFvcNfvE

That link works fine here.
You should see "Calling youtube-dl..." in the status bar when opening the URL.
You can also put youtube-dl.exe in "C:\Windows" folder.
Just to be clear, you must use the latest MPC-HC version from K-Lite. Old versions (1.7.13) of MPC-HC do not support it.

Disregard, I reset everything in the Codec Tweak Tool, works great!! Now just have to figure out which tweak caused it fun, fun, fun. Thx. Does this work with Windows Media Player as well, if so which folder do you place the youtube-dl.exe in?

No, it doesn't work with WMP. But that is a terrible player anyway
Here is a list of video sites that it supports:
