Cannot install v15.5.0 on Windows 2004 (stuck on registering files)
Hi all,
I recently upgraded to the Windows 10 x64 2004 update. I've had no issues watching programs and films at all until the following happened this morning.
This morning my weekly update ran and said there was an update available (15.5.1). I downloaded it and ran the installer which advised me to run the normal installer due to having a recent windows version update. I selected yes to do so and continued to download the normal MEGA 15.5.0 installer.
When running the latter, I selected all the usual options for the installer but at the end of the wizard on "Registering Files"; the wizard froze, without producing the (not responding) message in the very top of the install wizard window OR any errors showing. Soon after, my other tasks (Google Chrome, File Explorer and Macrium Reflect processes began to run really slow). After my backups finished (Macrium Reflect), an hour later, the wizard was not showing signs of moving on so I ended the task via task manager (which took a while to open).
I rebooted to find that everything was running slow. K Lite pack had installed to the location I chose. So I thought I would run the uninstaller but I got an error saying that one of the .dat files was corrupted. I manually deleted the files and manually cleaned the registry items. Rebooted and my system was fine.
I then tried to run the installer again with the same results as before.
Please help me to resolve this
My system seems to be running fine now without K Lite Codec installed.
I have provided my most recent log file from my %temp% folder https://pastebin.com/yNXbJum6.

Re: Cannot install v15.5.0 on Windows 2004 (stuck on registering files)
It seems to hang on registering madVR64.ax but I don't know why. No issues here on W10 2004, and no other reports of this problem either.
I would recommend to scan your harddrive for bad sectors. A bad sector can cause the system to hang or become slow when reading/writing to that location.
Another possibility could be that some third party software like a virusscanner is somehow interfering. I also don't recommend to run backup software in the background when installing or removing software.
Try installing without madVR.
Process Explorer can maybe show what is happening. It also allows you to terminate regsvr32.exe in case something hangs again.

I need to read up on that process as not familiar with it.Admin wrote:It seems to hang on registering madVR64.ax but I don't know why. No issues here on W10 2004, and no other reports of this problem either.

I just ran sfc /scannow and corrupt files were successfully repaired. After checking the CBS log file, a .net file (C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\\mscormmc.dll) was the culprit. No other issues.
I'll run chkdsk c: /f /r later on as it requires a restart.
To be honest, I'll be surprised if my M.2 drive is faulty as it was only installed end of Nov - this is a new system build (Ryzen 3700X build, Corsair MP510 480GB m.2 os drive. I will however check it still

I'm sure I disabled my avast free anti-virus but will double check. I am unsure if I disabled Malwarebytes Premium correctly as I just clicked on "exit" after right clicking the icon in the taskbar.
Try installing without madVR.
I'll try this as a last resort if running the normal install has the same result again.

Thanks. Will keep you apprised.
Re: Cannot install v15.5.0 on Windows 2004 (stuck on registering files)
The bad sector issue is mostly just for traditional magnetic hard drives.
Here you can download madVR as a zip file:
http://madshi.net/madVR.zip
Try if it also hangs when you manually try to register madvr64.ax
For administrator command prompt run: regsvr32 madvr64.ax
To unreg: regsvr32 /u madvr64.ax

Re: Cannot install v15.5.0 on Windows 2004 (stuck on registering files)
I have managed to sort the issue and both installers have now installed correctly.
I can only assume I did not fully disable Malwarebytes or AVAST FREE properly.
Or it is because I did NOT run the installers as administrator.
Either of those were the problem.
See this screenshot for disabling Malwarebytes and AVAST FREE.
Thank you for your help in resolving the issue.

Re: Cannot install v15.5.0 on Windows 2004 (stuck on registering files)
The installer automatically runs as Administrator. So that is not something you can forget or do wrong.
Security tools often 'hook' themselves into other processes, injecting code which may cause trouble. These exploit protection features often do more harm than providing actual protection. Windows 10 already has good exploit protection, so it is redundant as well.
I suspect it is probably MalwareBytes. Try updating it to latest version.

Re: Cannot install v15.5.0 on Windows 2004 (stuck on registering files)
Both Malwarebytes and AVAST were up-to-date.
Should I report this to Malwarebytes directly?
I do not allow them to track my usage due to privacy concerns.

Re: Cannot install v15.5.0 on Windows 2004 (stuck on registering files)
Yes, it never hurts to report it to Malwarebytes.
Re: Cannot install v15.5.0 on Windows 2004 (stuck on registering files)
If I remember correctly a similar thing happen to me in the past, Malwarebytes and an antivirus at the same time caused zip and 7-zip be unable to create files in the temp folder.
Also disable wasn't enough, I had to uninstall it.
I'm not sure if something got fixed in all this time.
I had also added a sort of detection for this specific case here (just to avoid bug reports hard to diagnose).
