Streaming to PS3 ? Empty Streaming to PS3 ?

Post by Bad Prit Mon Oct 31, 2011 4:35 pm

Hi,

Using the default windows7 configuration & the way the PS3 handles (or rather : doesn't handle) a lot of files, the PS3 picks up the media server that is running on any Windows7 in the homegroup. However the PS3 doesn't care about any subtitles (.srt) which are found with the same name of the media file. Millions of users are therefor running 3rd party media servers (TVersity, PS3Mediaserver, etc).

Can altering the Preferred Decoders (with your Win7DSFilterTweaker) help the users so that the subs do get streamed to the PS3 ? For example by setting the preferred XVID/DIVX/H.264 filter to ffdshow instead of the default Microsoft one ?

Or does altering these default decoders has nothing to do with the media streaming part (to the PS3 for example) of Windows7 at all ?

Thanks for any response.

Looks like this has nothing to do with streaming.
I changed the default Preferred Decoders to ffdshow, but during streaming, no ffdlshow icons appeared in Win7, and no subs on the PS3 Sad

Streaming means that the compressed video is send to the PS3 and decoded by the PS3. The decoders on your PC are NOT used!

Those 3rd party media servers can also transcode. That will re-encode the video on the PC, allowing to add subtitles. But it will usually lead to quality loss.

You can buy dedicated video players nowadays that support all common formats, with subtitles. I have seen ones that cost less than $50! And they us much less electricity than a PS3.

Oops, thanks, now I got it, streaming does not mean transcoding.
I was of the impression that ffdshow would take over when played (over the wire) by WMP just as ffdshow kicks in when the media is played (not transcoded) by MPC-HC, and thus it would "draw" the equally named subs over the video there also.

...and that I don't understand, when playing media using MPC-HC (via ffdshow), the video doesn't get transcoded also, and still ffdshow is able to associate equally named .srt files there, even when no transcoding is happening ????

When playing on the PC the video is decoded and everything is possible.

transcode = decode > re-encode > stream
