Windows Media Player does not detect K-lite Basic codec repository
Hi!
I have reinstalled my pc. It's a Windows 10 machine.
Now I can't play any videos anymore (I am not trying to play DVDs). For example: I download a video from Youtube and tries to play it. It will not work. Format does not matter. WMP says that I have to install codecs. I have been using VLC and it works just fine, but I like WMP also.
So I downloaded K-lite Basic codec pack and installed it.
I get the same error message: there's some codecs missing and I have to install them.
I reinstalled the K-lite codecs again and got the same error message.
I guess I must be doing something wrong, but what?
Thank you very much!

This error can also be shown when there is a problem with the video/audio renderers. It isn't a missing codec in this case.
I recommend to re-install your graphics and sound driver.

I t works with VLC which indicates that drivers are ok.

That is a very wrong conclusion. VLC uses totally different renderers. If VLC works ok it does not mean that the drivers are working correctly 100%. There can be issues that only affect specific applications. I give the recommendation because it has helped dozens of other people with similar problems.
You should try the MPC-HC player that is included with the Standard version of the pack. That will give more useful error messages.

Thanks for answering. I updated my graphics driver but get the same error.

The only player inclued is Media Player Classic. It works, but the image quality is not very good.

Re: Windows Media Player does not detect K-lite Basic codec repository
Media Player Classic = MPC-HC
Can you describe how is the quality differs from what you expect? Then I might know what could be wrong. For example "washed out" colors can be solved with a setting in nvidia driver.

The image in VLC is somewhat more detailed. It's not a huge difference, but I can see it.

Re: Windows Media Player does not detect K-lite Basic codec repository
These adjustments may help improve quality:
MPC-HC menu > Play > Filters > LAV Video
Change hardware decoder from "DXVA2 native" to "DXVA2 copy-back".
MPC-HC options > Playback > Output > Resizer > "Bicubic A=-0.75"
MPC-HC menu > Play > Filters > LAV Video
Change hardware decoder from "DXVA2 native" to "DXVA2 copy-back".
MPC-HC options > Playback > Output > Resizer > "Bicubic A=-0.75"

Where can I find MPC-HC menu?

At the top of the window: File/View/Play/Navigate/Favorites/Help

Media Player does not have that menu, in my case.

I am talking about Media Player Classic, not Windows Media Player.
You can also right-click on the video to get the menu.

Thanks, I did find it. Is it possible to make it work with Windows Media Player? I have tried different mp4 and MKV files. Some mp4 works with WMP. Most do not. MP4 from Youtube do not work, neither do MKV.

Re: Windows Media Player does not detect K-lite Basic codec repository
Windows Media Player uses the Media Foundation codecs from Windows by default for such files. And those codecs sometimes have issues.
There are two ways to make it use the codecs from K-Lite:
1) Rename the file to extension .video
2) Use our Codec Tweak Tool to disable Media Foundation
Method 1 is recommended, because some browsers and games require Media Foundation to be enabled.
