AV1 AOMedia decoder support for WMP on Windows 7

Hey, i read in the changelog that AV1 is supported since 2018, but when i try to play a video with AV1 in Windows Media Player, WMP simply crashes.

I'm using Windows 7 SP1 (plus all updates after)
K-Lite Codec Pack Version is 15.2.0 Basic
I use Windows Media Player for ALL my media.

I tried the dav1d builds (https://code.videolan.org/videolan/dav1d/pipelines) but i dont know how to properly instal them as they dont come with an installer.

Try the 15.2.1 update. That contains a newer version of the dav1d decoder (as part of LAV Filters).

If that also crashes, then please tell me where to download the file that crashes. Then I can have it fixed.

The dav1d builds you looked for can't be used with WMP. That needs a DirectShow filter.

Sadly still happens after the 15.2.1 update..

Ah yea, i'm not tot sure what is and isn't a DirectShow filter these days.
Things used to be as simple as registering an '.ax filetype' file back in the xvid days..

Confirmed.

Plays ok with 64-bit WMP. I will investigate further about the problem with 32-bit WMP.

It turns out that 32-bit WMP sets the available stack space to a much lower value than the default value for Windows processes. It not large enough for the dav1d decoder to function properly. This is all very technical programming speak, so it is not something you need to understand. But short and simple story is that it currently won't work in 32-bit WMP. The developers of the dav1d decoder would not to change their implementation to use less stack space.

It does play in other 32-bit players. Benefit of using 64-bit WMP is also better decoding performance.

You can select 64-bit WMP as the default player during installation of K-Lite.

Ah, i think i understand-ish.
I noticed the option when installing K_Lite, but there's no way to set the 64-bit WMP as default without reinstalling, though. Is there?

You don't need to do a full re-install. Just run the installer again and change the settings.

The Codec Tweak Tool also has an option (in various tweaks) to make 64-bit WMP default. But that currently only affects its own standard file associations. In the future, it might also be made capable of modifying the additional file associations created by K-Lite.
