Is there an option to preview video without playing them?

Windows Explorer has a "Preview Pane" option.

To be able to play videos in it, you need to apply a registry tweak. Here is example for .mkv files:

And where do I have to use that code?

Copy the above text into a .txt file. Then rename that file to extension .reg.
Double-click on the .reg file to import it into the Windows Registry (= sort of a database with settings).

In explorer itself, there is an option to display the preview pane.
