Problem with MKV file playback
Hello,
I'm having a problem with a MKV file playback, the audio is ahead of the video. The video moves slow and lagging to keep up with audio. I have the latest update for codec.

Re: Problem with MKV file playback
How high is the CPU usage during playback?
Your system does not support hardware acceleration of HEVC video. So you should disable that in LAV Video decoder.
Unrelated to the problem, but you don't need this stuff anymore:
- windows essentials codec pack
- ac3filter
- real alternative
- quicktime alternative

CPU usage during playback is 95+%
I unticked H.264, which is the only one ticked, but the audio still ahead of the video. BTW, MKV is H.265.

Re: Problem with MKV file playback
With such high CPU usage I am afraid that your system is not fast enough for 1080p H.265.
H.265 is other name for HEVC.
I see that you are using a 32-bit version of Windows. Installing a 64-bit version of Windows would give better performance for video playback. Certainly for H.265 the performance of a 64-bit decoder is much better.

I understand
I even tried playing the file on my Samsung LED Smart TV but apparently it doesn't support HEVC.

Re: Problem with MKV file playback
If you want to play 1080p videos, you should probably stick to H.264 format.
You might be able to play H.265 files that have a lower bitrate than the one for which you posted the MediaInfo log. The amount of data gives a rough indication for the decoding complexity. So a file smaller than 2GB (per hour of video) might work on your system.
Avoid 10-bit video, as that is even more complex to decode.

Re: Problem with MKV file playback
Thanks a lot for your time.
I have a question not related to H.265. I noticed that my WMP freezes during playback for like 10-15 seconds before resuming playback, and this also happens (surprisingly) to some extent with VLC, any idea why this happens?

Re: Problem with MKV file playback
How often does it happen?
Next time it happens, open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and check which processes are using the CPU. Something else might be working in the background periodically. For example virus scanner.
Or perhaps the harddrive had gone into sleep mode. Spinning up again takes several seconds. In the Power Options in the Windows control panel you can configure when the harddrive is allowed to turn off. The default is something like 15 minutes of inactivity, so normally this should not happen.

It happens everytime I use WMP.
I'll check Task Manager and Power Options and will let you know though I doubt it's not any of them. Thanks again.

Re: Problem with MKV file playback
So it happens when starting a video? I initially though you meant it happened intermittently during playback.

It happens intermittently during playback. I forgot to mention that it happens with Winamp too, and I always use it when I'm working online, so I guess HDD inactivity is out of the equation!
