MPC-HC frequent freezing when loading any video file?
I recently installed Klite Mega pack on a new PC and MPC is very often freezing when opening a file.
It can be any file. It opens the player but remains blank. I need to kill mpc-hc64.exe from task manager.
If I open the same file again it works without issue. This happens every few files I try to play.
I used all default settings for the Mega installation.
Before I would only see freezes rarely and only if it was a corrupt file. Now it happens so often that I keep task manger opened on the m's all the time.
Is there some way I can figure out what is happening and stop it?
Thanks

Re: MPC-HC frequent freezing when loading any video file?
One possibility is that your harddrive has spinned down (energy saving mode). Then it takes a few seconds to spin up again. The app freezes during that time waiting before it can read data.
There is usually a led on your computer that indicates when there is harddrive activity. It blinks when reading. It may burn constantly while spinning up.
In the Power Settings of the Windows control panel you can disable the harddrive from going to sleep. Or increase the period of inactivity before it does so.
Another possibility is your virus scanner blocking things while it scans the files.
Also make sure that you using the latest version (14.9.9) as there was a fix a few weeks ago for an issue that could sometimes freeze the player during opening.

Re: MPC-HC frequent freezing when loading any video file?
I don't think it is not sleep related. I have an SSD, and other drives as well. But this happens all the time from any source. I play some and they work then freeze. Then the same file will work the next time but might freeze again after that.
When if freezes MPC becomes completely unresponsive, but no other activity such as disk or CPU.
I have let it sit for a few minutes and nothing happens.
I am using the latest 14.9.9 mega version clean install with all default settings.
I have no issues at all on my older computer. Is there any way to move all settings from the old one to see if it work here.

Re: MPC-HC frequent freezing when loading any video file?
The freezing seems to have stopped, at least for now.
Changes:
Tweaks, Turn off Fast seek (was skipping way too many keyframes)
Player > Keys, Change Frame-Step to Right-Left Arrow.
Playback Repeat mode set to File.
Playback>Output DirectShow Video set to System Default (but this was done earlier because with default Enhanced Video Rendered my system would lag for a second when loading files)
I don't see how any of these could of fixed it, but for over a week I have had constant freezes, even this morning. I changed the Keys settings as well as turn off Fast seek and since then I have played countless videos without a freeze.
I can think of nothing else other than maybe saving changes somehow fixing some corruption. I will update if it happens again, but for now it seems to have stopped.
Thank you.

Re: MPC-HC frequent freezing when loading any video file?
The system default video renderer is a very old and basic renderer. If it works good with that, then your problem is almost certainly related to your graphics driver.
Disabling hardware decoding in the video decoder might help avoid the problem. And of course updating the graphics driver may fix it.
