Codec packs not working on games
Hi
I'm trying to play Resident evil 2 sourcenext version who has better quality videos that the original pc release, the problem is that the cutscenes videos dont show up I only got black screen and static noises. At first i was using FFdshow (lastest) then someone recomended using K lite(mega), unistalled FFDshow and installed K-lite but nothing changed.
Also i tried my RE2 platinum edition who has a diferent video encoding (indeo 5) and even if FFDshow askme if i wanted to use it to see the video, it doesnt show correctly (there is an orange rectangle instead of the video, sound works but with a lot of static) even when i do have FFDshow configured to work with indeo 5
I tried changing the options on both codec pack with no luck (win7Dsfilterfilterstweaker on k-lite and the "Use FFDShow only in" options on FFDshow)
Tried no using neither of the packs, it didnt work.
Tried using the Indeo 5 installer from the platinum edition without any codec pack didnt work either.
My guess its that there is some kind of registry problem and the codecs are no working along with any exe file that is not a media player.
I can play the videos files (.bin files) on media player classic using K-lite (tray icons apears) and FFdshow (tray icons dont apear).
I have Win 7 Ultimate SP1
Video files info from media player classic:
Video: MPEG1 Video 640x480 29.97fps 4000kbps [Stream(E0)]
Audio: MPEG Audio 44100Hz stereo 192kbps [Stream(C0)]
The guy who sugested K-lite also have Win7 and th game works fine for him, but he mention that is a common problem on win 10 but then again searching for a solution I found people with Win 10 that solved this using K-lite so I dont know anymore.
So the question is: there some way to make a "fresh start" of codecs or forcing windows/.exes to use them? (other than the tweaks from the codec packs)

Re: Codec packs not working on games
Test if the GraphStudioNext tool that is included with K-Lite is able to open the video .bin file. That tool behaves as a standard DirectShow application.
The codecs are available for use by all DirectShow applications (unless blacklisted).
Indeo 5 codec is included with Windows. It is just not enabled by default.
Codec Tweak Tool > Codec and Filter Management > ACM/VFW (x86)

Re: Codec packs not working on games
The problem is caused by that Karaoke software that you have installed. One of its filters is set as the default handler for .bin files.
Should be easy to fix.
Start the Registry Editor:
Start > Run > regedit.exe
Then remove this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\Media Type\Extensions\.bin
You can make a backup of that key with File>Export. That way you can restore it in case it is needed for Karaoke.
GraphStudioNext x86 should then show same graph as for x64. If not, you can lower merit of "Karaoke BootStrap Filter". GraphStudioNext menu > Graph > Insert Filter > Change Merit > Merit unlikely

Re: Codec packs not working on games
Awesome now works like a charm.
I now realice when I installed gameex (a front end for games) it came with Karaoke for DirectX so that was culprit.
This is going directly to every Resident evil pc troubleshooting site with your name on it XD
Thanks for the help men and sorry for the trouble.

Re: Codec packs not working on games
Great! I like helping to solve this kind of problems. I wish more people would report such issues here. It is so frustrating to see gamers struggle with problems on other forums, sometimes even blaming my codecs. While in reality it is usually caused by other software.
