subs on WMP

Cannot get external or internal subs to work on WMP; running K-Lite 13.6.5 Full using LAV decoders on WMP x64 (Windows 10).

Things I've tried to get it to work:
Reinstall xy-VSFilter
rename srt file to exact match of mkv file
disable all ms codecs and all media foundation file extensions

I have also tried all this with WMP x86.

Any suggestions?

This is essential for subtitles:
Codec Tweak Tool > Preferred Decoders > Reset > Click NO to reset to recommended defaults (= Use Merit)

xy-VSFilter may cause the player to crash. I recommend using the normal VSFilter instead.

Did the reset and reinstalled normal VSFilter. That helped the embedded subs work, but external subs still won't go.

Uninstall everything and then install K-Lite 14.0.0. This already includes a good version of VSFilter and it also sets the preferred decoders correctly. So the only additional change that you need to make is disable Media Foundation and disable Microsoft DTV-DVD Video decoder.
