low and/or jiggered sound
xp pro sp3, fully updated, WMP files have been deleted, right now I have the klite codec pack mega 1370 installed right now, (downloaded just now) and then when issue still existed downloaded VLC from your download page and installed and the issue is not relevant now.
1. Was working fine, till today, I had run some rootkit scanners (without finding anything) and then I went to play one of my playlists that I had in my documents folder, (have done this everyday for years , ), and I could not get the sound to stop being kind of jittery , up and down and then very low,
2. tested my audio with xp system sounds, then reinstalled my audio driver, (sound max) , then uninstalled klite codec pack and downloaded a new one, same issue, then uninstalled that package and installed the mega package, same issue, then downloaded VLC and the issue was gone, songs play nicely, and it would even play on the mpc-hc player, but that orange cone was down at the bottom.
3. I have never liked VLC, no big reason, just don't like that orange cone on everything, so if at all possible would like to get MPC-HC back to business
4. any assistance is appreciated
5. also today before issue, I updated my antivirus 360 Total Security by Qihoo, not sure if this had anything to do with it.
===========
EDIT: well, I spoke too soon the same thing is happening with VLC, will try going back to my previous AV and see if that was the issue.

Try with headphones. It is possible that one of the wires of your speakers is damaged.
It is not a player or codec problem. It is something lower level or possibly a hardware issue.

ok, will try new headphones and speakers as it does it with both.

Re: low and/or jiggered sound
Is it just the volume that goes up and down? Or is quality also bad, like crackling or static noise?
Qihoo could be the cause so try without any scanner installed. A good scanner is Eset NOD32, with the benefit that it doesn't slow down the system much compared to most other scanners.

Nod32 is definitely more bloated than it was in the past(uses more RAM and cpu cycles than other free antivirus). I do still recommend it but if you can't afford it, a lightweight antivirus like Avira is great. Avast is also great but only if you do a custom install with only "File Scanner" selected.

Re: low and/or jiggered sound
Okay, went and bought new speakers , problem still persisted
Cleaned inside of pc with air, tried again still there
Changed to a new drive, had a backup fully installed, problem gone so something had become corrupted on my drive so all is good now, works with old speakers, headphones and new speakers,
Thanks for all the assistance.
I also have the original 360TS installed version 8.8.0.1043, the new version was 8.8.0.1049, now that all is working, I am going to update the AV and see if the problem reoccurs.
ESET is paid and 360TS is still free so that is why I use it,
