K-Lite Basic Upgrade not playing DVDs

I have had the K-Lite Basic codec package installed on my system for about 3 years ad it has been absolutely AWESOME!! ZERO troubles right from the installation. Never eve had to use the 'Tweak' tool. It plays all audio and commercial bought DVD's without so much as a glitch!! It was K-Lite version 5.4.4(installed about 3 years ago.)

My system is WinXP SP3, running on an Acer Aspire 3620 which has been upgraded in RAM to maximum of 2GB. Although an 'old' machine(2006), it runs FLAWLESSLY, even beating some 'new' Win 10 stuff which I've observed in public settings. I was give this machine by a student who was throwing it out. It had almost 48 'broken' installations which I slowly and tediously removed(quite a slow task with that many) using both Revo's awesome Uninstaller and Ccleaner's equally awesome disk and registry tools. The system also has Acer's D2D recovery system, a mirror image on "D" drive, another asset in fixing 'broken' stuff plus great for back-ups prior to new installs/updates, in case they fail.

The K-Lite v5.4.4 Tweak tool identified some old, broken codecs which I chose to NOT remove at the time.

I went for a full update to K-Lite Basic codec v12.8.0 then added upgrade v12.8.2. This time I let the installer remove those 'broken' remnants. I used it in default settings as I do with all software at first. Audio CD's worked fine, but DVD's would not play and I got a Windows Media Player error stating that there were missing codecs/filters(Windows Media Player is my only one.) So I went into the Tweak tool and had a look. I noticed the DVD box was not checked, so I did so and retried. The video codec Tweak box is a bit beyond my capabilities and complex but I tried a few changes including checking off the MPEG-2 box. Still no luck with the DVD's, but strangely I got a different error from Media Player: It said there was a 'copyright' error between the player, the codec/filters and the video card!! No such errors exist with v5.4.4!! It suggested updating the driver for the video card. That was done over a year ago to the last update given by Intel for the chipset. That chipset is an 'old' but trustworthy Intel 915GM/GMS/910GML. I can not find newer drivers. But this whole thing works just fine on the older K-Lite Basic v5.4.4!!

I'm sure that it is possible that I don't know how to match the video settings correctly on v12.8.2 or maybe this version is not compatible with my 'old' system. I did a D2D Recovery back to just before the update, back to v5.4.4 and everything works perfectly again!! Should I leave well enough alone?? Or are there settings on V12 that would solve the 'copyright' issue?? I did generate a log file from v5.4.4 after the recovery but once again did NOT let it remove the 'broken' codecs. Here it is:

PS: I usually keep software up to date. I'm VERY fussy about that. But K-Lite Basic v5.4.4 worked so perfectly I did not give this much thought!! Maybe should have followed the "Texas Rule": if it ain't broke..........
But if I can make v12.8.2 work, I'd like to have it. As I said, I've had ZERO problems with the old package. It is really awesome software, a minority in the real world!!

The new Basic version is a bit smaller compared to the old one.

The solution is simple. You need to install the Full version. That contains the DScaler5 MPEG-2 decoder which is used for DVD playback on XP. You can install on top of your current installation. Just make sure to select that decoder. Or if you do a fresh install, select "Profile 4: Standard playback (without player)", which contains just the essentials (including DVD playback).

Thank you so much for that info. I was going to inquire about that DScaler 5 as I went back to the site description and found that Basic(the original version I have, v5.4.4) must have included it, but on v12 Basic doesn't have it. Only available on Full and Mega.(Basic and Standard do not have that DScaler5) I will now go back and reinstall v12. Once again, thank you so much for your time. I really enjoyed the K-lite codec. It has given me 4 years of absolutely trouble free use, right from installation. I do mean ZERO problems. Works perfectly every time!!

This specific decoder is only needed on Windows XP. Since the percentage of users that is still on XP has reduced significantly (currently around 5-6%), it is only included in the largest variants of the pack, which is what most people use.

Good to hear you were so satisfied. Current version should be even better! If you ever do run into a problem, just come here and we should be able to fix it quickly.

Today I did finally install K-Lite codec v12. I let its Uninstaller remove v5.4.4 rather than Windows Uninstaller(WMI usually leaves a lot of garbage on the hard drive anyway, I use Revo for most other Uninstalls. Keeps Registry clean too). This was the Full package. When it asked for primary audio and video decoders I selected 'ffdshow' blue(audio) and red(video), as was the old version. Plus the DScaler5. I have not allowed the Tweak Tool to remove those old, broken codecs just yet. But super happy to report that v12 works just awesome!! You were right about being better!! The audio is practically 'studio' quality(I selected Stereo rather than 2.1 for compatibility with other devices, may change later. To 2.1 for my 2.1 sound system. When I do CD's they are all encoded at 320kbs for best sound on mP3's.). The movie soundtracks sound better than my DVD player, a bit more 'airy' and ambient, ditto for audio CD's. All are crystal clear too. Will run this 1 week before installing that small update. Then make my 'mirror' image recovery disk.(It still has v5.4.4. I left that in case of trouble as I know it worked well.) I hope the primary 'ffdshow' decoder choice was correct. Everything works great!! Thank you so much for your help and support!!
