Cannot change AVI Splitter
Hello, guys.
I have a strange issue. In Codec Tweak Tool, I cannot change the default .AVI Splitter to LAV Spliter. When I try and click Apply, it immediately reverts back to Microsoft. I have a few AVI files with different audio streams, and I remember that I could open the file in Windows Media Player before, LAV Splitter's icon would then appear and I was able to simply select the audio stream from its context menu. Now, because it is stuck to Microsoft, WMP plays all the audio streams simultaneously as LAV Splitter does not load (and it doesn't load because I can't set it to load). It is as if this setting is locked and won't let me change it. I can change the splitters for all the other file types, only AVI won't let me to.
I thought that this was an issue after updating the Codec Pack, but I tried to uninstall it and install earlier versions, and it was always the same. I have been using this great pack for many years and I clearly remember that I was using LAV Splitter for AVI instead of Microsoft's when playing multiple audio streamed AVI file. I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.
I have been trying to fix this for several days now and have finally given up, resorting to this forum. Please, could you suggest what could be the reason for this sudden change of behaviour, is there a manual registry setting to change?
Thanks in advance, best regards!

Re: Cannot change AVI Splitter
Strange that it doesn't work.
Here is a Registry tweak:
Here is a Registry tweak:
- Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\Media Type\Extensions\.avi]
"Source Filter"="{B98D13E7-55DB-4385-A33D-09FD1BA26338}"

Hello, and thanks for this straight to the point answer, you are a genius! This ".avi" key didn't have any strings, it was completely empty and locked that way. It had Permissions set to not allow anything, even for the Administrator. Once I changed that, the Codec Tweak Tool was able to change the AVI Splitter, but only for the 32-bit player. Could you tell me what else do I have to check in the registry to make the Tool change the preferred splitter for 64-bit playback, too?
Thanks in advance for the additional info, I am going to bookmark these suggestions as you have really helped me a lot.

Thank you, that did the trick. The problem is now 100% solved, now I can select LAV Splitter as default AVI Splitter and play multiple audio AVI files by selecting the desired audio from the tray icon, as it was before.
Because of this strange thing, maybe you could implement a change in the Codec Tweak Tool to display a message like "Cannot change this setting due to insufficient persmission", and then suggest options. Of course, this is just a suggestion. Nevertheless, you really solved my problem, many thanks!

Re: Cannot change AVI Splitter
It actually has the ability to adjust permissions. So that could be used in this case. Are there any other extensions for which the permissions are wrong?
Re: Cannot change AVI Splitter
No, I tried all the other extensions, and all of them were changable via the Tool. Only AVI was problematic. If the Tool was supposed to adjust Permissions automatically, it obviously didn't work.
Symtomatic:
Because the AVI Splitter is at the top of the extensions list, once I tried to change it from Microsoft to LAV Splitter, I clicked on Apply and could see that the Tool refreshed the Windows and the splitter reverted to Microsoft. It obviously tries to do something, yet fails. This was before you suggested the registry trick. After I went to that registry key and adjusted the Permissions myslef, the Tool was able to change the Splitter. It obviously needed some help in removing the Permissions.

Re: Cannot change AVI Splitter
It doesn't do it right now. I meant it could do it in a future version if needed.
Re: Cannot change AVI Splitter
Hi again. Upon updating to the latest version 12.2.5, I now have two "recommended" settings for the AVI splitter. I can change between the two, that all works, but it looks strange and the previous version showed only one recommended setting per class. Have a look at the snapshot:
Is this part of the update, or is the Tweaker being confused?

Re: Cannot change AVI Splitter
Both are considered "recommended". More AVI splitters (Gabest, DivX, etc) exist on some systems.
Re: Cannot change AVI Splitter
OK, because I haven't changed anything other than the Pack update, so this is the first time there is more than one "recommended" per setting. OK, so the updated version now recommends several available splitters per class, is that the case? Just as check up, I revrted to version 12.2.2 and the double recommended was gone, there was only one.

Re: Cannot change AVI Splitter
Both those AVI splitters are considered to be "good". It is as simple as that.
