Re: Videos wont play in RealPlayer
Which version of RealPlayer? What computer (exact make and model number, with the software version)?
Any recent software updates, especially in anti-virus or security?
I just got a bunch of good help, and the more information you can provide, the better they can pinpoint the issue.
When I had RealPlayer (about 4 years ago), the download format was Flash, which RealPlayer could handle easily. Now, things have changed: Flash has been set aside in favor of mp4, something which is included in many cameras and phones. mp4 is based on .mov, a file format originating with Apple's Quick Time.
Also, YouTube and other video sites have switched over to a different file format called HTML5. The file extension (the part after the dot) is .webm. This provides for HD resolution and improved sound, but older versions of RealPlayer can't download it.
Firefox and YouTube had a major disagreement for a while, until finally Firefox had to cave in and alter their video structure to allow HTML5. As I understand it, this actually cost Firefox some money, which is against their nature of open-format, open-source.
Anyway, the thing here is that RealPlayer has moved to a cloud-based format. YouTube is enforcing a "no downloads" policy, and some of the videos posted are simply not available for download.

Re: Videos wont play in RealPlayer
Don't use RealPlayer for downloading videos from YouTube. It is known to create broken files.
YouTube uses the MP4 DASH format for its HD videos (in addition to WebM). The main problem with that format is that YouTube uses separate files for the audio and video. RealPayer is probably just downloading one of the two files.
If you use Firefox, then give this plugin a try:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-video-and-audio-dow/
It is capable of downloading those MP4 files and merge them together into a single working file with both sound and video.
