Problem with update under win 8.1 Empty Problem with update under win 8.1

Hello,
I'm a user of Rollback Rx and with the help of this program i discovered that after updating the K-Lite Codec Pack i had problems on my System (Windows 8.1).
You must know that The K-Lite Codec Pack is installed for quite some time and that it is updated regularly. So, i updated it the last time on december 25th with version 11.7.9.
Since then, it was impossible :
- to update Windows
- to update Nvidia
- to print something (all my printers, virtuals or not, were gone).
Any idea on what could happen all of a sudden and the solution that can be made?

The codec pack itself can't cause such problems. I am 100% certain.

Did you perhaps install Lavasoft Web Companion? There is a tiny chance that it is somehow conflicting with your virusscanner or firewall, causing a network issue. If so, uninstalling that should fix it,

Check if there are any errors in the Windows Event Log. That might provide some hints about what could be wrong. For example printing issues can happen when the Printer Spooler Service fails to run.

Which error code does Windows Update give? Which error does the Nvidia driver installer give? Don't use Geforce Experience to update, because it is very buggy.

Thanks for your prompt answer.
First of all, I have not installed (and don't have) a Lavasoft product on the PC and I did not use GeForce Experience to update Nvidia but the file "361.43-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe".
About the course of the updates, the progress bar continued imperturbably (Microsoft) or was blocked after a third (Nvidia). There was no error message in both cases.
At the time, I disable and reactivate the Printer Spooler Service without result : all the printers were disappeared.
Meanwhile I of course returned to the situation before December 25; I was then able to perform the two updates without any problems and all my printers remained visible..
It is useless for the time that I tried to completely uninstall the K-Lite and reinstall it, since I have no more updates to make, but I will do it at the first opportunity ..
I personally think that the problem could come from a sudden conflict because I never had a problem performing your updates by overwriting the old version.
I hope my english was correct because I speak french.

Have you tried updating the codec pack again to see if the same problem occurs?

In fact when I observed the facts I even tried to pass the update and install directly the update 11.8.2 in januari but it was the same result.

Oh ! Yes I also did it with at least five snapshots before December 25.
The PC works now on base of a snapshot before this date and the last update of the K- Lite is intervened November 30 I think (version of MPC-HC64 is 1.7.10.21).

Hi,
Result of first attempt - overwriting the existing version !
- No install.log in the folder of K-Lite CP (?)
- the printers are disappeared (!)
Rollback before the installation: the printers are there.
I'll do a complete desinstall and a new install tomorrow.

You can use a custom file location for the log with this command line parameter:
/log="c:\klcp.txt"

Next time the printers disappear do this:
Start > Run > services.msc
This will open the Windows Services details. Check if the following services are started:
- Printer Spooler
- Remote Procedure Call
- RPC Endpoint Mapper
- DCOM Server Process Launcher

If one of those services is failing somehow, then could explain the printers disappearing.

Second attempt this morning : complete desinstall with Revo uninstaller.
Immediately after the new installation, the printers are there (install.log too this time, but i don't have find the way to attach it).
However, after a reboot they are gone and the Printer Spooler is stopped (could not start it ; error 0x800706b9).
The 3 other services are active.
Rollback and everything works fine (Printer Spoller active).
For the rest, I do not think the 3 issues identified can/should be resolved separately, since they all disappear instantly when the KLCP update is removed.

Did you use Revo each time? It can only cause problems. Please only use the K-Lite uninstaller. It is very smart and cleans everything.

To use command-line parameters:
1) Navigate to the folder that contains the installer with Explorer.
2) In the Explorer location bar type cmd and press Enter. It will open the Windows Command Prompt (with the correct folder)
3) Type the command and press Enter: K-Lite_Codec_Pack_1185_Mega.exe /log="c:\klcp.txt"

No, it was just to be sure that everything was gone before the reinstall.
By the way, I've never had any problems with Revo; you must read & check what Revo suggest of course!
Thanks for the command-line procedure but one thing remains sure after these two tests : the fault don't occurs during installation, but during a reboot.
Do you need the install.log of the second attempt or not. If yes, how do I send it?

You can upload the log file to for example http://www.sendspace.com and then copy the link here.

You can also log the uninstall. Same procedure.
unins000.exe /log="c:\klcp_uninstall.txt"

If files are in use during (un)installation, they can be scheduled for removal/replacement at the next reboot.

Are things still working after uninstall and then a reboot?

Ok, thanks, that was useful. Your system does contain some left-overs of a Lavasoft product. I suspect something goes wrong when cleaning that.

Please try again with this version. It contains some extra logging. Click yes when asked to remove the left-overs.

Hi,

Sorry for my late answer...
Given your comment about Lavasoft I first sought a way to get rid of it.
I found 2 dll-files "LavasoftTcpService" in Windows.
I launched AdwCleaner who suggested to delete only one, but I had problems after the reboot.
He also suggested deleting SuperEasy Video Booster, which I did (but don’t know the exact reason, because the exe-file is OK for VirusTotal).
I then followed a procedure given by MalwareBytes (at the command prompt as administrator "netsh winsock reset") and was able to remove the two dll-files without problem after a reboot.
I then install (overwriting the old version) your last version of the K-Lite and….. surprise : the printers were still present after the reboot.
I then launched the installation of the 9 updates of Microsoft from yesterday and it went smoothly.
My problem is thus resolved, but I don’t know exactly the responsible : Lavasoft or SuperEasy.
The K-Lite Codec Pack was not and I can only thank you for your great help !

The codec pack also removes the Lavasoft entries from the Winsock catalog. It only removes the specific entries, so a full reset is not needed. That is safer and should work without problems (it has been successful 1000+ times). But in your case something went wrong and there was presumably still something left behind. Then when the dlls are removed, the problems occur. Which is kind of a flaw in Windows in my opinion. Further enhancements will be made to avoid this problem in the future.
