Yesterday I noticed that Windows Media Player would no more show subtitles. I already had K-Lite since a long time. Today I installed the latest version, 11.7.5 Full. Now if I open a video that has subtitles (internal like mkv or external like srt) the video immediately crashes. For a file the first time I tried to open it it said something like [ memory error... 0x00000000... it couldn't be "read" ] but it happened only the first time, now it just crashes.

I have no problems with VLC.

I have Windows XP SP3.

Some time ago I had another problem with WMP: the energy power went off during an Avast update and after that the WMP taskbar disappeared forever and couldn't be put back. And a few days ago the power went off: maybe something happened again to WMP?

I can reproduce the problem. I will investigate.

For taskbar:
Press Ctrl+1, then Ctrl+M, then Menu>View>Full Mode options>uncheck Hide Taskbar

Can you test with the latest nightly build of MPC-HC?
https://nightly.mpc-hc.org/
You may need to reset the settings with the Codec Tweak Tool, so it uses VSFilter for the subtitles.

It should open a crash report page at drdump.com. Can you copy that link here?

Was VSFilter being used by MPC-HC? By default it uses its internal subtitle renderer.
Options > Playback > Output > Subtitle renderer > VSFilter

I thought the filter choice was changed by resetting with the Codec Tweak Tool. Now I've changed it in the MPC-HC options (it's called "VSFilter / DirectVobSub"). And it still works fine (the file opens, I see the subtitles and everything else seems ok). I've verified that the option change was saved and even tried by closing and reopening MPC-HC.

Do you also see VSFilter in Menu>Play>Filters?

The K-Lite 11.7.8 update should hopefully fix the problem with WMP.

Yes. It's called "VSFilter (auto-loading version)".
