Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
Hi everyone,
I promised I trawled through the forum first to see if anybody could answer my concerns before posting. I have actually been using Shark007's codec pack for years but when I upgraded to 10, some videos wouldn't play, so I thought they were just incompatible. Anyway, I fudged something on my system and ended up doing a clean install and decided to give K Lite a try. But interestingly, I have the same exact problems. What's weird is that on both Shark and K Lite, the thumbnail will generate, but the two videos I have won't play. I am trying to stay with WMP if I can, and on both codec packs, WMP will attempt to play and sort of hang for a sec and then just say the file can't be played. I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong and I didn't experience this in previous iterations of Windows.
Anybody have any ideas for? Thanks!

Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
1) Codec Tweak Tool > Various tweaks > disable DXVA
2) Also disable DXVA in LAV Video decoder
Hardware acceleration is broken with certain Windows 10 drivers.

I'll give it a shot now - thank you!

If you use AMD graphics, get the Catalyst 15.8 beta driver that was released today. That should fix the problem.
Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
Hello,
I appear to have the same issue. When I upgraded from windows 7 to 10 I had playback issues. I uninstalled all my codecs in order to do a fresh install, which for some reason wouldn't function properly, and so I installed k-lite basic because all I wanted was Directvob, lav filters and the codec tweaking tools. The install setup with k-lite allowed me to set WMP as my associated player which I think was somehow the key to everything working. 10bit vids, dts audio, everything was fine.
Then a few days ago something serendipitous occured and LAV no longer opened when playing associated files. So I have done several fresh installs of k-lite, fiddled around with the codec tools (use merit settings for direct show, filter ect.) and they were all where they were supposed to be.
I found a program called graph studio or something like that which allowed me to import the video and get a neat flow chart of the processes the video is supposed to open when used and everything seems to be fine there as well, it shows the video splitting into its designated filters and outputting as it should. Then I hit video playback and everything works (hideous video rendering though but its good for testing). Also the LAV/DVS tray icons show up when playing in this program. So I have concluded that something bad happened with WMP and I have no idea what else to do.
Oh also I already installed 15.8 (im also on an AMD card) and disabled HW Acceleration using codec tweak tool (was already disabled in LAV, I dont think I really need it anyways)
I am sorry if this has been posted before but I saw this thread and figured maybe someone more knowledgeable about this stuff might be able to help. Ive been using ffdshow, then CoreAVC and then LAV for several years and never really had much issue.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
ok so I guess this is worth mentioning, I just installed AC3 Filter and now LAV works with most videos (not 10bit I guess this is my main issue now) LAV audio decoder has been overridden I guess

Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
One reason for LAV Audio not being used is when you have enable audio pass-through, but your system does not support that (possibly due to driver issues).
10bit should work fine with LAV Video. Try re-installing the pack so that all settings are set correctly again. The only change needed afterwards is to disable Media Foundation with the Codec Tweak Tool.

Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
I'm pretty sure my system does support pass-through, only for AC3 and not DTS though my receiver is fairly old. I will try disabling ac3 and testing that out on LAV (im positive I already tried that).
I actually fixed the ac3 5.1 issue I had (volume control via cpu OS). I have a gigabyte motherboard with spdif support and realtek audio something or other. I clicked on the realtek audio device (optical) > advanced tab and unchecked "allow this device to be taken over by other programs" or something along those lines (Im not at home atm sorry lol) and now I can control ac3 5.1 via the OS. But im not sure its 5.1 anymore.
Also like I said up top, I have reinstalled LAV many many times over the past two days and the only thing that seemed to work was installing ac3 for some reason. I also disabled media foundation before without any luck. I will try this again though when I get home. I also reset settings and used some of the "fixes" in the tweak tool. Nothing has worked.
Thanks for the help Admin.

Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
If you want to control volume on the PC, then pass-through must be disabled. That option you enabled probably does that. Spdif only supports stereo PCM.
AC3Filter is able to fall back to normal decoding in case passthrough fails. So that could be a reason why it worked while LAV did not.

Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
So I have reinstalled LAV video decoder, as well as checking off all x32 media foundation formats and I still cannot get 10bit video to work.
Something I have figured out is that WMP will not load LAV/AC3filter with MKVs encoded with h264 video AND any audio other than DTS. Other file formats seem to be fine, it appears to just be MKV files. Ex) MKV Video 1 has h264 8bit video with DTS audio = filters work and show up in tray, MKV Video 2 has h264 8bit video with AC3/EA3/5.1 or AA3 = filters, MKV Video 3 has h264 10bit video with ANY audio = filters don't show up.
Also in the codec tweak tool under preferred filters, LAV is selected as the default for MKVs and I guess its worth mentioning that I have h264 checked in LAV.
Super stumped here. Just to be sure, uninstalling all codecs, then doing a registry cleanup, then restarting cpu, then reinstalling codecs is a safe way to do a fresh codec install?
I really appreciate your advice and support

Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
Codec Tweak Tool > MS Codec Tweaks > disable Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio and Video decoders
I recommend using Media Player Classic. That is much more reliable than WMP.

Re: Codecs Not Working on Windows 10?
disabling microsoft DTV-DVD decoders took away all my video, so I reinstalled LAV filters again in expert mode, carefully chose settings and then disabled decoders again and everything is working wonderfully now.
Thank you!!!!!!!

Good. But strange that it didn't work the first time. The default settings for LAV should already be correct.

I just wanted to update everyone on this - this solution totally worked for me.
Thank you!
