Post by zoser Thu Jan 29, 2015 7:42 pm

I just updated to the latest klite version "10.9.8" and notice that when trying to play .mkv 10bits videos with the mcp or others player my pc just stop a few second loading the video, then play it like normal, the others type of videos open normaly even the 8 bit mkv.
The problem only occurs once per pc power up then it reproduce each video normaly.

OS:win 7 ultimate 64bit
Here the MediaInfo of one of the videos in question.

slow load time when trying to play mkv 10bits videos Empty Re: slow load time when trying to play mkv 10bits videos

I don't think it is related to the videos being 10-bit. My guess is that those videos contain subtitles, with embedded fonts. The symptoms that you describe are exactly the same as for a problem that exists for many years. It only happens for a few people. The exact cause is unknown, but it is suspected that it is related to fonts.

When playing a file that contains a custom font, that font is installed temporarily. So some kind of (unknown) issue in Windows is causing a delay the first time this happens. Maybe it is rebuilding the font cache.

Thanks for the reply, so the whole problem lies on the video itself. But just to be sure, is there something i can do to try fix this? i know the problem is not that big but is a little annoying.

Download CCleaner.
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

It can scan the Registry for all kinds of invalid stuff, including left-overs from incorrectly uninstalled Fonts. Perform the scan (with just Fonts checked) and see if it finds anything. If it does then let it fix/remove it and reboot.

Second thing to try. CCleaner > Windows > System > Clean Font cache. Again do a reboot and test.

Do you know if you have installed any additional fonts? The problem could possibly be caused by a specific font. If you export a list of all installed fonts and copy it here, then I can compare it to a list from my system. Maybe uninstalling non-standard fonts will help.

Well i did install some additional languages packs on my pc, so maybe one of then is causing the problem.
Also, i all ready got ccleaner installed and did what you suggested, but didn't found any errors.
Either way here is the export of the fonts i got install.

I will check the fonts list a.s.a.p.

Next time you restart your computer you should first play a file that does not have any embedded subtitles and font. Then we know if it is really related to subs/fonts.

I have checked the list. Almost all are standard fonts from Windows or Office, so those should be fine.

This one is not a standard font, so you could try uninstalling it:
Value 250
Name:            Segoe UI Semilight (TrueType)
Type:            REG_SZ
Data:            SEGOEUISL.TTF

This is the only font that isn't located in the standard Windows fonts folder.
Value 275
Name: MT Extra (TrueType)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\EQUATION\MTEXTRA.TTF
Considering that such a non-standard location can cause problems, for example with a recent (broken) patch from Microsoft (KB2975719), I also suggest removing this font. You can easily re-install it if needed by double-clicking on the .ttf file.

Ok i did all of what you suggested here what i got.
1.on power up i played a normal video without embedded subs and it open fine.
2.did uninstall the 2 fonts and restarted my pc but got the same problem when i put the video.

Beside all this i when to the page where i got the video they suggested to use on external filters
lav audio decoder
lav video decoder
directvobsub(auto-loading version)
On playback option setting, uncheck auto-load audio file, use the built in subtitle renderer.

I was going to try usesing this configuration but i didn't find the directvobsub on the external filters list.

Changing which filters are used will not make any difference. It happens with all of them.

Something else you can try.
1) Get Process Monitor.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
2) Start Process Monitor before playing the first file.
2) PM Menu > Filter > Filter > add "Process name = mpc-hc64.exe" (or mpc-hc.exe if you use 32-bit player)
3) Play the file, wait till it has started and then pause it.
4) Pause capture in PM.
5) Look at the time column in the log and see if you can find a gap that could correspond to the delay. The entries just before it could give a clue about the cause.

slow load time when trying to play mkv 10bits videos Empty Re: slow load time when trying to play mkv 10bits videos

So i use the PM but didn't find any significant time gap. There is a few millisecond gap in various place, but i really don't see anything that gimme a clue on the cause of the delay. A little thing that i did notice is that the .exe name of the mpc is different from your post "mpc-hc_nvo.exe" is a minor thing but it got my attention.
Either way i going to leave a link to the log of the PM capture if you can give it a look.

The log was actually very helpful! I think I have found a solution.

The different filename of MPC-HC is because you have a system with NVIDIA Optimus. The standard filename does not allow choosing the desired GPU, but always defaults to the Intel one. The custom filename provides the ability to choose.

Back to the problem. I checked the log and I noticed some unusual activity immediately after the file atmfd.dll is loaded. That file is related to Adobe Type 1 fonts. The log shows that it spends several seconds reading files from the c:\windows\system32\catroot folder. That folder contains information that Windows uses to check for file integrity. So my first though was that it somehow triggered Windows File Protection, possibly due to a damaged file. After searching on that dll plus catroot, I found a topic about a similar problem with Google Chrome, while opening a webpage that loaded a custom font.
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=162028

That topic contains a likely solution for your problem:
Start > Run > services.msc
Configure the Windows Font Cache service to start automatically.

Just checked the Windows Font Cache service and it was already in automatic, i did try to change it to manual then back to automatic, but the same thing.
If you got another thing i can try just post it, but to this point i think i have stretched this far to long and maybe is time to format my pc.
Either way thanks for the help.

Another Windows service that is even more directly related to the catroot folder is "Cryptographic services". That is should also be set to load automatically.

Since the delay happens just once after each fresh boot, it seems very plausible that it is related to a Windows service being started. If the above does not yet solve it, then you could try making another log with PM with the option "Show Process and Thread activity" enabled. Then we should be able to see what is being started.

Same thing like the last one the "Cryptographic services"  was already set on automatic.
Here the PM log, this time i save it as .pml with this you can see it much clearer.

To verify integrity of the atmfd.dll file:
Start > Accessoiries > Command Prompt > right-click and run as administrator
Then run this command
sfc /scanfile=c:\windows\system32\atmfd.dll
And if you want to scan the whole system
sfc /scannow

Here is a tutorial on how to verify/repair the contents of the Windows catroot folder:

I did both integrity verification of atmfd.dll and the whole system. And in both i got this message "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."
On the verify/repair of the catroot folder describe in the link you post, i was following each step carefully and in both i got " Access is denied", i did set the Command Promp to run as administrator, so no idea to why i didn't get access.

It works here. Exactly for which command do you get the error?

On the veification part in this command line is where i get the error "esentutl /g <%systemroot%>\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb" and almost the same line on the repair part "esentutl /p <%systemroot%>\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb" both of then give me the  "Access is denied" error.

Did you perhaps not replace <%systemroot%> with c:\windows in the command? I can't think of anything else.

Yeah a overlook on my part, forgot to change <%systemroot%> to c:\windows, this time it did work. I got to do the repair and then do the verification, didn't get any errors and the verification got the "Integrity check successful" message. After that i restarted my pc and try to play the video but the same thing with the delay, So back to square one.

Well i have to thanks you for all the help and time you took looking into this even if the problem still persists, but on the upside it appears that it did work a little. Because today i tested again the video and this time the delay was less, atlest now it's more bearable and with this i will just leave it like that. So thanks again.

A side effect of the repair is that it defragments that folder. So it loads faster if it was (heavily) fragmented before.
