Update 10.4.0: "Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3" on XP Pro SP3

Hello:

I tried to install the latest update 10.4.0 on XP Pro SP3 and got the following error message:

C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Filters\vsfilter.dll

Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3.

I've never had this problem with any of your updates or full installations. Please advise.

Can you also test the complete installer instead of the update?
It is working here on XP SP3.

I already did that. The 1st time I kept the check in the box to just perform an update, and the 2nd time I removed the check to perform a complete install. Same result each time.

Based on an article that I read in another forum, I even performed a repair of Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package, then tried the update. Same result.

This didn't find anything other than the usual false positives associated with XP, namely missing ieshims.dll and wer.dll. I googled them and they are not in XP, according to my research and many reported that the Dependency Walker utility regularly reported these false positives.

Just to be sure, I checked my laptop (XP Home SP3) and they are not in XP (and my laptop successfully installed the update 10.4 without a hitch).

I have even run a system file check (sfc /scannow) to see if the DLL cache needed rebuilding. Same resulting error message after again attempting the update.

The only negative that I noticed is that within the Codec Tweak Tool's DirectShow Filter Configuration, nothing happens when I click "DirectVobSub (x86)".

Visual C++ Redist should not be needed. Also, ff it did, it would be the 2013 version.

You could try to manually run:
regsvr32 vsfilter.dll

Maybe that will give a more detailed error message.

Tried to manually register the dll as you indicated and got this:
LoadLibrary("vsfilter.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.

I also entered it as: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Filters\vsfilter.dll". Nothing happened when I did this one.

Next, I used Revo Uninstaller and completely uninstalled the codec pack, rebooted and performed a clean install. Same result.

That error means it failed to load a file.

You can monitor all file activity with this little tool:

Monitor the activity when running the regsvr32 command. Disable the Registry monitoring to reduce log size. You can also add a Filter to it only logs activity of regsvr32.exe.
It should show all files it tries to load and if it was successful or not.

I tested on another clean Windows XP install and vsfilter worked correctly here.

A word of warning about Revo uninstaller. It can cause problems in some cases because it reverts things that it should not.

Thanks for all of your help. But I'm done. I even installed the update on my mother's XP Home with no hitch. I don't know of anyone else that has XP Pro to check the update on. I've had hitches over the years where a program or update would install on one version of XP but not on the other. It has never been your program or updates.

There has not been any functionality loss that I've discovered thus far. My DVDs play flawlessly via MPC, which is why I put the program on my computers in the first place (it took the place of an old version of Intervideo WinDVD).

All computers I tested had XP Pro. So it is not related to the XP variant. I even tested with SP2.

I shall try to figure it out on my own.

I also have the same problem.

My OS is Windows XP 32-bit SP3,
and this is a newly re-installed computer, with several other tools installed,
so the OS should be rather clean.

I just tried to install K-Lite codec 10.4.0 by complete way but not update way,
and I got the same error message as the subject title of this thread.

I then re-started Windows, closed all programmes, then installed K-Lite again,
but got the same result.

I never had this problem with all previous versions.

Please help.

All correct!

I went to install version 10.4.0 again for the last try
and, as expected, failed.

I then took a risk and installed the last version 10.3.5,
it installed without any barrier.

I then installed the 10.4.4 update,
it installed well too.

I should like to know:

1)
Does that mean this way of installation of K-Lite will work
same as the 'normal' installation of version 10.4.x?

2)
If I had chosen to continue installing version 10.4.0 by accepting
'skipping registration of vsfilter.dll', would K-Lite have worked properly?

Anyway, it seems to reveal that the problem very probably lies with version 10.4.0.
Hope it would help to debug.

but I can not remember exactly the real dll's name.

I did not note it down from the pop-up window,
I just copied the name from the subject title of this thread to post on the last reply.
The dll file name may be different from it.

I just quickly examined the version, and found two things:

1)
GraphStudioNext (K-Lite Codec Pack\Tools\graphstudionext.exe) did not work.
The pop-up error window appeared, said that there was a problem of graphstudionext.exe
and had to close.

After pressing the provided link on the pop-up window for additional error information,
another pop-up window said:
Wrong signature
AppName: graphstudionext.exe
AppVer: 0.6.1.317
ModName: graphstudionext.exe
ModeVer: 0.6.1.317
Offset: 00024353

After pressing the provided link on this second pop-up window for relevant technical information,
the third pop-up window gave exception information, system information, etc.
(sorry it was very long indeed, I cannot type all here.)

2)
There were two icons in the K-Lite Codec Pack icon group within Start Menu:
Codec Tweak Tool
Win7DSFilterTweaker
However, they all executed the same file: K-Lite Codec Pack\Tools\CodecTweakTool.exe.
Therefore, they were the same.

You need to press "Ignore" when you get the error during installation. Then everything else will work. Things are not correctly installed if you abort.

10.3.5 + 10.4.4 will work, just uncheck xy-vsfilter in the update. However, I would like figure out what is the cause of the problem. So please install 10.4.0 again and ignore the error. Then follow instructions below.

Download the x86 version of Dependency Walker:
http://www.dependencywalker.com/

No installation is required. Just unzip it (with for example WinRAR or 7-Zip).

Open vsfilter.dll with Dependency Walker. Check if there are any red colored items in the list on the top left section of the program. Also look for yellow question marks. You can ignore all items with an hourglass icon in front of them, because it is normal that some of those are red/missing. You can also ignore the two warnings at the bottom about delay-load dependencies.

The list in the top left section of Dependency Walker will automatically expand when it contains items of interest. You don't need to press on the + signs. Simply scroll through the list.

I have done all you said.

I uninstalled v10.4.4, then re-installed v10.4.0

This is the exact error message from the pop-up window:

I opened C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Filters\vsfilter.dll with Dependency Walker.
Dependency Walker showed:

-Red (with hourglass icon in front):
MPR.DLL

-Yellow question mark (with hourglass icon in front):
IESHIMS.DLL
WER.DLL

In the middle section, for each of the two yellow question mark files,
Dependency Walker said:
Error opening file. System cannot find specific files. (2).
(Not the exact original message, this is my translation to English.)

One more thing:
This installation wrote below files to C:\

The installation did not clear them,
and I am not allowed to delete them manually.

Is it normal to have these installation files in C:\?
I think they normally appear in the Temp folder?
Therefore the installation was abnormal?

Those files belong to the Icaros Thumbnail plugin. They can't be removed because they are still in use by Explorer. They will automatically be removed the next time you restart your computer. So this is completely normal.

V10.4.0 does not seem to work properly,
at least DirectVobSub does not seem to work,

It is a strange problem. This version of vsfilter works correctly for thousands of other XP users. I even tested it on an old XP SP2 installation. I have found a total of 4 people on the Internet that have reported this problem, including a user of another codec pack.

Does your XP system have any special tweaks or modifications, or is there any software running in the background?

Does GraphStudioNext work with 10.4.4?

GraphStudioNext does not work with v10.3.5 plus v10.4.4 either.
(I did not check with v10.3.5 solely.)

I used GPEDIT.MSC to tweak some Windows settings,
including not to display Recycler icon on desktop,
not to execute autorun with optical drives, etc.

Furthermore, I have discovered that v10.3.5 plus v10.4.4 does not install Haali Mux.
(Folder 'C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Filters\Haali' is there but lacks the .exe)

There is an option in the installer for Haali Muxer. It is only installed if that is enabled.
