Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
(Admin - I refreshed my screen and it now seems to let me...sorry for the instant message. I just really want to get this resolved)
hi there!
I am trying everything everywhere to resolve the issues myself. I came in to the forums to ask for support but it shows that I cannot reply to or post anything..? What's that for? I already clicked the activate email that I received? and am logged in.
I need help. I am such a novice! But I did everything I could think of regarding the FAQs. First did the playback issue: unable to play the files on vista.. and followed the suggestions in there.
What I am trying to do is view and EDIT MP4 files on Movie Maker. At first I couldnt even get them to be imported to WMM. Now I can get them there so that is good but there is only audio and a black screen ( not only on movie maker but also wmp ). So I went back to FAQ and followed the instructions under miscellaneous regarding playing a file on Movie Maker. I followed those instructions to, changing the name to AVI and also enabling ffdshow. The AVI helps in an easier import, but still unable to watch the video, just hear it.
And also followed the Video Playback issue that was exactly what my issue is, the black screen with only audio. I couldnt find the VMR-7 or 9 but i think i did the haali renderer. Again. I am a supreme novice so I am trying to follow along the best I can.
Its as if its only interpreting the file as an audio. I say that because all the edit functions are greyed out and unable to use.
I wanted to post this in the forum but it doesn't seem to want to let me..?
I read the 'must read before posting' there as well and it said to copy and paste a generate log. I did that. I am going to paste it here. If you can somehow transfer this message to a post that would be great. Really. I have downloaded and uninstalled so many things in the last 24 hours trying to resolve this. I know the K-Lite pack and codec tweak tool IS how I resolve these problems. I just dont know how to get it to completely FIX them. Can you help me?
I would appreciate it immensely

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
Go to compatibility settings and also enable LAV Video decoder and LAV Audio decoder if they are listed.
If that does not help, then open the ffdshow video decoder settings through the Start menu. On the 'codecs' page in ffdshow settings set 'h.264' to 'libavcodec'.
Does playback work in Windows Media Player or the GraphStudioNext tool that is included with the codec pack?
The VMR-7/9 options only apply to Media Player Classic, not to WMP or WMM. Those applications do not provide any choice in video renderer.

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
Hello, thank you for your reply!
I went into the compatibility on WMM and there is no options for LAV video or Audio decoder.
And so I did go into the ffdshow video decoder. and switched it from disabled to Libavcodec.
I even restarted just to make sure the changes were applied. So, now, I CAN watch them in WMP, which before I could only hear them. And I can watch them in Graphstudionext, But still on WMM I can only hear them, still black screen. It must have something to do with the Lav Video Decoder/Lav Audio Decoder. Everything in the compatibility screen is enabled, none of the options are those..
Is there something else I can try? or a way to find these Lavs?
By the way, thank you again.

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
Oh and just curious since you are clearly super knowledgable on these fronts.
If I still can't get the files I have to work, if I purchased the episodes/clips from Itunes, will that format work on WMM or will that another issue altogether?
Do you think if i try a different program trial for the same functions as WMM that would help? What i mean is, do you think the problem I am having is WMM related or file related?
Thanks again AND again

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
There is no guarantee that it is possible to open those files in WMM. The tricks often work, but not always.
It is strange that playback didn't work until you enabled h264 in ffdshow. It should work with disabled too, and use LAV Video decoder instead. Which video decoder does GraphStudioNext show if you disable H264 in ffdshow?

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
If LAV is not shown in the compatibility options, then WMM is probably allow to always use it. I think it only lists specific codecs there. So don't worry about that.
Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
Okay I am going to try the above again and see what happens.
I went into Compatibility on WMM and confirmed the FFSshow is checked.
I went to the FFDshow on the computer. h.264 is showing Libavcodec.
There are a LOT of disabled items in there though, the majority actually, (where as in the ffdshow audio the majority are libavcodec) - are any of these important:
FLV1, MP41, MP42, Mp43, h.263+, avisynth, raw video, real video 1 2 3 & 4, MS Video 1, Fraps, MS Video 1, Indeo 3 4 & 5, intel H.263, cinepak, ff1, DV, other DV, Camstudio, corepng, QTRLE, QTRPZA, SVQ1, SVQ3, 8BPS, MJpeg, huffyUV, H.261, WMV1/7, WMV2/8, WMV3/9, Mpeg1, Mpeg2, VP3, VP5, VP6, VP6f, VP8, Theora, DivX 3, DivX 4/5/6, other Mpeg 4, xvid
They are all disabled. I didn't want to start clicking and changing thing and potentially making things worse. Also, should I be double checking into ffdshow audio decoder or VDW interface, or those are fine the way they are?
I still dont see where the option to use LAV video decoder is though.. But did I temporarily disabled the H264 like you said
in Graphstudionext...
The grid showed:
Lav splitter source in the first box, it divided into a top and a bottom box.
Top box = Video --> Input = Lav Video Decoder --> output -->VMR input0 = Video Renderer.
bottom box = audio --> in = ffdshow audio decoder --> out --> audio input pin (rendered) = default directsound devide.
When I click play it opens up in activeMovie Window Renderer.
Any suggestions from here?

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
What GraphStudioNext shows is correct. Did it play correctly with LAV Video decoder?
The codec pack uses LAV Video decoder by default. So it is normal that most things are set to disabled in ffdshow video decoder. You can safely enable things in ffdshow if you prefer to use it instead of LAV.

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
I haven't been able to view it correctly at all. Having it play in Graphstudionext doesnt help me with the playback issue on WMM or even the Videopad.
its not that I have a preference over LAV, i just was trying to think of other reasons as to why I still get the black screen / audio only, because obviously the settings it's at are not working. Is there something else you can suggest?
Thanks!

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
Install the latest graphics driver for your system:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2800&DwnldID=17407
If that doesn't help, then I am out of suggestions. Movie Maker is just a very bad program.

Re: Trouble shooting with FAQs still not helping: Audio only/black screen on WMM.
Hey, Thanks for the other suggestion. I will try that when i get home and let you know.
Just as a question. Could it be more than just a movie maker problem? I mean I just downloaded Videopad so will work with that from now on, it seems to let me work with MP4s. I am going to try to use those files again, but if the same issue happens would that mean its not a problem with movie maker but with something else?
I will let you know what happens

Some programs use their own private codecs. That is why behavior can be different.
