Black screen but audio Empty Black screen but audio

Hi there,

I have been an avid (and faithful) user of the k-lite codec pack but recently I am starting to have some troubles. I have browsed through this forum and read the FAQ but I cannot find a solution for my troubles. Each time I have audio but the screen remains black (in all media players). If I however uninstall the k-lite codec pack and download it again, it starts working normally again. Dare I turn off my computer however, I am faced with the same problem.

Here is what my computer looks like:

OS: Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium Service Pack 2 (6.00.6002)
DirectX: 9.0c + 10 + 10.1 + 11
CPU name: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz
CPU speed: 2261MHz
Memory: 2048MB
Screen size: 1920x1200 (32bits)
Video card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
VendorID: 1002, DeviceID: 95c4&subsys_029f1028
Video driver: atidxx32 (Version 8.512.0.0) (7-3-2008)
Audio device: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Audio driver: stwrt.sys (Version 6.10.0.5939) (5-6-2008)

Since I can play videos on almost any format, I don't think my graphics card is the problem.

Something on your computer must be messing with the codecs or their settings. Probably some program that starts when Windows starts.

Instead of re-installing, try just resetting the settings.
Codec Tweak Tool -> Settings -> Reset
Enable just one of the items each time. Then test if it fixes playback. This allows us to figure out which specific settings are relevant for the problem.

Check which programs start when Windows starts.
Start -> Run -> type "regedit.exe"
This will open the Windows Registry Editor. Navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Right-click on that key and choose Export. Save the file somewhere.
Right-click on the file that you saved and choose Edit. This will open it in a text-editor.
Copy all the text in the file and paste it here in a reply. Then I can check if I see anything suspicious. And maybe also give some tips on removing unnecessary stuff to speed up your computer.

PCMService belongs to Cyberlink Power Cinema. If you do not use that program, I recommened uninstalling it. PCMService is a known resource hog, and can also cause problems resulting in typing being slow. I would also not be surprised if it is the cause of your black screen problem.

Some entries that you can safely remove are:
ECenter
dellsupportcenter
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher
TkBellExe

I would also recommend uninstalling Java if you don't use it. Removing it will significantly reduce risk of getting a virus while browsing the Internet.

Thanks once more for this elaborate explanation (from my point of view). I have uninstalled PCM (and Media Info which was linked to it) which I do never use. For the moment the problems seem to have faded. All worked well.

It can't be played because it is encrypted.
