Installation problem of K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 14.1.5 stop at "Registering files..."

Hi,

I'm using Win 10 64bit version 1709 and no K-Lite Mega Codec Pack installed.

When I'm trying to install the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 14.1.5, it stops at the final stage showing "Registering files...". I tried to install it again and tried to install the mega version 14.1.0, the same happend again, just like the picture below.



I tried to uninstall the K-Lite Mega Codec but the uninstall program can't be found. It show the icon just like below. The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack also can't be found in the program and function in the Windows setting. So I can't uninstall it now.



What can I do to solve this problem? Thanks!

Weird. Open the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) when this happens. Show all processes, and then terminate "regsvr32.exe" process. Then it should hopefully continue, allowing you to uninstall. You may need to close multiple instances of regsvr32.

This is certainly not normal. I don't know what may cause this, perhaps a broken/overzealous security program, or some damaged Windows file.

There is a log file in your TEMP folder. That should show on which file it hangs.

When the installation process hanged, I have tried to open the Windows Task Manager to terminate the setup process and no message about successfully installed K-Lite Mega Codec Pack shown. No uninstall program can be found in Windows. The icon of "Uninstall K-Lite Codec Pack" remain the same as shown above.

I didn't mean you should terminate the setup process. I meant a child process "regsvr32.exe", which is a utility form windows that is used to register certain types of files.

Copy %temp% in the location bar in Explorer to open your temp folder. You can find a log file there. That should give more details about exactly where it hangs. Copy the last few lines from the log here, and I should be able to give more detailed advice.

You can delete the files, but there may be some more (harmless) leftovers.

Another thing you can try is to deselect all components in the installer (on the "Select Components" page). You need to select at least one, for example Codec tweak Tool. Then install and uninstall.

Deselect the DirectVobSub component during installation. Hopefully it won't hang on other stuff as well.

Will this bug be fixed in the next version?

It works correctly for (a few million) others, so it is not really a bug I can fix. Certainly not if I don't know what causes it. Something on your system is causing this issue.

Do you have any issues with other software recently?
Any uncommon software running on your computer that runs in the background and may possibly interfere?

and the RegSvr32.exe error message is as follow.

Can you translate the first line of the error message? I assume it says the parameters are wrong.

That is strange since the parameters are correct, and it is run with "/s" switch which means it should never display error messages. Does the installer continue if you click away the error?

My guess is that you have a broken regsvr32.exe file, or that some other program is interfering with the execution of the program.

Consider updating to Windows 10 1803, as that should fix any broken system files.

Also try temporarily disabling your virus scanner. Those sometimes cause weird issues like this.

The error message above is "To register a module, you must provide a binary name." Cause is "Regsvr32.exe was invoked without specifying any modules in the command line."

That error should not appear under normal circumstances when running the installer.

Despite I switch of the anti-virus program, the installation process also hang. The log is as follow:

At least some of the regsvr32 calls are successful now. But I have no explanation why it keeps failing.

You could ignore all errors, and then try to manually register the files using the commands from the log. Maybe it works after a few attempts.

Which antivirus are you using? Maybe try another one, or just Windows Defender.

I have the same problem.
It concerns all recent versions.
It seems it has something to do with the Task Scheduler.

I don't see any regsvr32 failures in your logs.

The failure to create a scheduled task (for update check) is completely unrelated. That is not important. It fails on some systems for unknown reasons.

14.2.2 beta will have some extra logging for the scheduled task issue

Sorry about that. I thought it's the same issue since it's happening at the same time.
Funny thing. I have 13.4.0 installed and now I can't upgrade it or downgrade it or even install the same version again. I don't have any new Windows Updates installed. I tried disabling Norton Security and it did nothing. I'm wondering what's the issue.
