Can't play mono MP4s

Stereo AAC work fine but mono ones don't ever since I got the dec. 20 mega codec pack. Whats up with this?

It doesn't work with ffdshow audio decoder. It works with LAV Audio decoder.

I don't wanna use the LAV decoder because it doesn't normalize audio. FFDShow always worked correctly before for MP4s whether stereo or mono so what's going on?

Other files with AAC audio play fine here with ffdshow. Even another one with mono sound. So problem seems to be specific to this file. Unfortunately, ffdshow is no longer actively being developed. However, ffdshow includes two different decoding libraries for AAC. Selecting the other one works for your file.

ffdshow audio decoder > codecs > select 'libfaad2' for AAC

MPC-HC also has a normalize function, just so you know there is another alternative. See Options > Internal Filters > Audio Switcher > Normalize

Ah yes libfaad is the setting I always used before. In this new pack I told it to reset settings to default due to a directvobsub crashing issue.

It's not specific to this file though but any mono file I encode with Nero enc.

Why is ffdshow not being actively developed anymore? That blows cock. No other decoder can match the advanced preprocessing settings it has. This software world is going on a downward spiral, I've noticed ever since the great, revolutionary program K-Lite Codec Pack is named after went in decline in favor of that retarded draconian Bittorrent.

It is possible to use the LAV decoders in combination with ffdshow for just processing the audio and/or video. There are options in the installer to get that behavior. Then you have the best of both worlds, a stable and actively developed decoder plus the full processing abilities from ffdshow.

I expect future improvements that will make the above combo work even better.

My primary concern is the thousands who download my content which is tuned for compression instead of quality which doesn't make the video look neglected but does sport lots of banding artifacts in bland areas which are fixed to perfection by FFDShow's Deband technique.

Regular users who install K-Lite Codec Pack will have LAV as the default so they won't automatically have deband pre-processing. That's what worries me.

Even when using ffdshow as decoder, deband is not enabled by default.

Next version of madVR will have an awesome deband function. Although, madVR is not a renderer suitable for novice users.

Yes but they receive instructions to right-click the red icon and select deband. It's two steps that anyone can follow. Configuring ffdshow for the default decoder is a lot more steps that a lot will likely ignore.
