I'm still unable to play .mp4 files in Windows Media Player on a Windows 7 computer even after installing the K-Lite pack. I have also tried several other codec solutions.

WMP uses the Media Foundation codecs from Windows for playback of MP4. Those have limited functionality and do not support all video formats.

There are three solutions:
1) Use the Media Player Classic player from K-Lite
2) Rename the file from .mp4 to .video, this will make WMP bypass the codecs from Windows and use the better ones from K-Lite
3) Disable Media Foundation with our Codec Tweak Tool. This has the same effect as option 2. However, it will break playback in other applications that require Media Foundation, which include several games and some web browsers.
