VSFilter not loading with AVC1 video files

Hello.
I am having trouble loading subtitles via VSFilter only with files encoded using AVC1 codec.
I am using the basic version of the K-Lite Codec Pack as it functions superbly for me to play videos using WMP12. Everything works great, except for these files encoded with AVC1 (part 10) codec. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64, but it is using the default 32-bit WMP for playback.

So, the "default" behaviour when loading a file with AVC1 video is:

- Video starts, no tray icons appear (when at least VSFilter's one should). Video and audio play normally, but without subtitles.

Here is what I tried to see what causes the subtitles not to load:

- First I disabled the Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder using Codec Tweak Tool.
- Upon reloading the video file, VSFilter then loads and subtitles are displayed on the problematic video files. LAV tray icons appear.
However, I have some games that use this decoder, so they either don't show their videos or simply crash when their video is supposed to appear. The solution to constantly remember to switch this decoder on and off is not really a practical one.

- Then I disabled the .mp4 in Media Foundation as per the suggestion in your FAQ, and then I re-enabled the abovementioned Microsoft Decoder.
- Upon reloading the video file, subtitles also appear, with all the tray icons.
Games also start and load their videos. So this workaround is effective for now, so to speak.

As I am feeling slightly reluctant to disable existing codecs as they are surely there for a reason, my question is: is it possible to divert this specific AVC1 format to be decoded exclusively by LAV and leave both *.mp4 and Microsoft DTV-DVD Decoder enabled?

The H264/AVC format is checked in the Formats tab of the LAV Video Decoder, but playback still passes it by and gets decoded by the "problematic" Microsoft's one, without loading the subtitles. If such setting is possible, please instruct me on where and what to select in the Codec Tweak Tool (or possibly in the VSFilter settings as well).

Both those tweaks cause WMP to fallback from Media Foundation codecs (from Microsoft) to using DirectShow type (from K-lite and others).

Another thing you can try is to rename your file from .mp4 to .mpv4
That may be enough to foul WMP into using DirectShow.

I have tested and the rename trick works for me on Windows 7 and 10.

Thanks to for the supporting replies. I too cinfirm that changing the file extenesion from *.mp4 to *.mpv4 works.

So, there is no way to set asomething like "Always play AVC1 content via LAV Video Decoder"? :-)

Will the confirmed workaround work with OGM or MKV files as these extensions are wrappers of original video files which are themselves sometimes in that AVC1 format? For instance, if I have a MKV file that doesn't load VSFilter, will changing its extension to MPV4 also work or will it cause some incostistencies while loading/playing the file?

This was really annoying and it took a lot of time for me to figure out the cause of the problem. I tought something was broken with the codes on my Windows platform. But here we now have 3 different ways to make the VSFilter load with the AVC1 video content.

The video format is not what matters here. What matters is if WMP uses Media Foundation or not. All these methods bypass the use of Medias Foundation.

Media Foundation isn't used for OGM and MKV files. So renaming trick isn't needed for those files.

OK, I just tried with a MKV file which contains video stram encoded with AVC1. It will not even start the playback, WMP is stuck with DefaultIME error. I set Microsoft H264 to MERIT and this error occurs. When set to LAV Video, this MKV video file opens normally and through LAV, but now with that setting those problemativ MP4 files load without subtitles. So, I still cannot find a configuration that will play ALL the video varieties as it should. :-(
Any ideas on this new outcome?

Is there any setting in the VSFilter (or specific version which addresses the issue) that I could try to force it to load even with those AVC1 video files. It all comes down to it not loading, maybe the culprit is in the filter itself. Only AVC1 video files are affected, everything else loads with subtitles perfectly, I just have no clue as to why VSFilter hates AVC1 so much when played outside LAV.

MERIT is required for VSFilter to load.

AVC1 (=H.264) just happens to be one of the formats for which Microsoft tries to force it own decoders.

The LAV Video decoder has a higher merit than the decoder from Microsoft. So if you get an error you may have something else unwanted installed. What is "DefaultIME"?

I don't know. When WMP gets stuck, a minimized window appears next to it with the title Default IME but, when I click on it, it does not come into focus. If I open Windows Task Manager at that point, it also appears there with a Not Responding status. I can End Task WMP, or I can wait. If I wait a couple of minutes, that Default IME window comes into focus telling me than it could not connect to a server (probably referring to "cannot open file" or similar, but I could probably be wrong) and continues to hang until I End Task WMP (then that Default IME process also disappears from the tasks list).

The MKV I mentioned opens only when I directly select LAV Video (so do all the other video files I tried). If Microsoft or USE MERIT is selected, WMP hangs. I would have prefered that configuration if it didn't have the effect of disabling VSFilter for the MP4-type files. When LAV Video is forced as a decoder, neither of the two previous fixes (disable DTV-DVD or *.MP4) make the VSFilter load.

Forcing LAV Video to open everything H.264-related really does open everything, except that those problematic MP4 files load without VSFilter.

The other two 'fixes' are irrelevant when DirectShow is already being used.

I noticed that you have another VSFilter installation:
c:\program files (x86)\vsfilter\vsfilter.dll

My advice would be to remove that and re-install the codec pack. That way you are sure you have a good version.

It might be that WMP is failing due to those Nero filters.

Test playback with 64-bit WMP. Windows uses the 32-bit one by default.

OK, I uninstalled the standalone VSFilter I was using and then reinstalled the Codec Pack. I chose the option to reset all setting to defaults and did not change anything in the decoders list, so now the only VSFilter is the one that came with the pack.

Here are the results now:

The original MP4 file that did not load VSFilter still doesn't load it, unless I disable the DTV-DVD codec or *.mp4. However, the problematic MKV file now loads with VSFilter... but there is a new problem. The VSFilter does not obey the subtitle placement. I put them in an "Extend to 4:3" because I have a 5:4 monitor. Subtitles position varies now from file to file, it even looks as if the font type and size also differ. The old VSFilter did not do this, that's why I was using it.

This is close to a solution, as I can now disable just the *.mp4 option, leave the DTV-DVD codec enabled so the games would not crash and be able to play all video files - only subtitles are shown buggy. I tried a few Widescreen video files, they all suffered from subtitles being pushed upward to much, almost at the very centre of the picture. The problematic MP4 video file is originaly in the 4:3 aspect ratio and subtitles are shown at the bottom of the picture as they are supposed to.
I see that this new VSFilter has more tabs. Is there anything I should set to correct this subtitle positioning?

Nope, the integrated VSFilter definitively has some serious problem, it displays the subtitles on the position it seea fit, completely disregarding the settings. :-(

The standalone VSFilter acts as before the reinstallation. :-(

Have you ever tried the MPC-HC player that comes with the Standard version of the codec pack? That works great and doesn't need any tweaks at all to play things properly.

Yes I have, and I also had troubles with subtitles. They were displayed twice and the MPC has a lot of settings I got lost into. I am not very knowledgable on fine-tuning that and it was a bit to complicated for me to set up. So I reverted back to the WMP thinking that the codec pack will suffice as advertised. And it actually does, except for these few quirks. :-)

Subtitle positioning is obviously broken somehow as it was functioning properly in the prevous VSFilter. And it is not limited to extension. I set that option back to Original Height and there was no difference. It simply fixes a font and its size and position regardless of the settings for that (I can change the colour on the fly, though, it at least reads that setting). The only videos where this does not occur are the FullScreen 4:3 AR files. On the good side, your VSFilter can at least be set to load every time on every video. But it displays the text wrongly.

I guess all the trouble really comes down to a faulty VSFilter. Each has its own good and bad sides. It would be great if the two could be combined to offer full functionality.

The double subtitles was because of that old VSFilter, so that is easy to fix. MPC-HC has an internal subtitle renderer. By default it will place subtitles at the bottom of the screen hen playing in fullscreen. I think that is what you want
Plus subtitles are much better quality when playing low resolution videos.

You can just ignore all the complex options. There is no need to change them. Stick to the things you understand, and if you have questions on how to configure something, just come here.

I am investigating a fix for the extend option in VSFilter.

I have been using VSFilter for a long time, from the original Gabest release. Back then, I had a TV connected to my graphics card. I remember that VSFilter was the only solution to have subtitles shown on both displays (mirrored). Regular players and their subtitle rendering would display it only on the primary display, but on the secondary (TV) the same layer was not present. Thus, VSFilter worked and offered much more settings and visual appeal than a player's layer for the subtitles. So I've been using it since then.

Yes, it would be great if the funcionality from the old VSfilter could be combined with the functionality of the new one. I see that there are a few other "mods" of VSFilter on the net, such as "xy" versions, but none of them is working 100% in all conditions. I tried one of them, I think it is called xySubFilter or something like that, it would even load with any of the videos (or maybe it has been designed not to be a stand-alone filter).

Also investigate other settings. VSFilter was not only ignoring the Extend settings, but also selected font and size. When it chooses to revert to a font type and size of its own, and you play a movie, even if you are changing those settings while a movie is playing it will have no effect. Only colour can be changed. So not only extend/crop is faulty, but some of the font settings as well.

For example, I set font Arial Narrow, Size 22, Colour Yellow. This works OK with Full-Screen videos. The moment I run a 16:9 or similar WideScreen video, the text is displayed moved upward at the center of the screen (so position is different) and the font looks like regular Arial Bold, Tahoma or something like that - not the one I selected. Even when VSFilter Configuration panel is opened while the movie is being played, it will still show currently set options Arial Narrow, Size 22, but it simply ignores them and is not using them for displaying the text. Changing any of those while playback has no effect, it simply fixates on something of its own. Only the text colour can be changed and actually work.

MPC-HC works fine with multiple screens. It also allows overriding font/color/size in case a style is defined in the subtitle.

MKV files often contains SSA/ASS type subtitles. Those can define multiple subtitle styles (font/size/color/etc) and can even contain embedded fonts. The font settings that you use in VSFilter only apply for basic subtitles without style.

The font size that you define is relative to a specific video size. Meaning that the size is always the same when playing in fullscreen. When not playing in fullscreen, it will appear smaller for low resolution files compared to a high resolution one.

xySubFilter is not for use with WMP. It only works with MPC-HC and a few other players.

Yes, yes, I know that font settings are possible only for text subtitles. ASS/SSA always display as originally coded. I was referring only to textual subtitles, such as SRT.

Yes, I managed to register the VSFilter.dll file and I must commend you on this release. Whatever you did, it fixed the problem. Subtitles now appear as they should, respecting position, font and size.
It is still necessary to disable the *.mp4 in Media Foundation in order to divert the problematic MP4 (AVC1) files through LAV, but at least now I can open all video formats in WMP and games depending on that Microsoft DTV-DVD Decoder as it can now stay enabled.

I see that yiu removed the subtitle resolution setting. Which I don't mind, I always set the "Use original resolution" so that it will depend on the video file.

Remember that MKV file encoded via AVC1 I mentioned in previous posts? Well, it now too opens on USE MERIT setting, I don't have to force it through LAV Video and subtitles also load properly. I even downloaded an Arabian subtitle for that file which uses their ortography and loaded it just out of curiosity, and it was also displayed properly. By far, this is the most functional and complete release of VSFilter I have tried. Well done, you did an excellent job!

I only tested the 32-bit version of VSfilter. If you need some more testing with something regarding this, please let me know, I will gladly help.

It would be useful if you could also test some files with 64-bit WMP.

This variant of VSFilter had some crash issues in the past with 64-bit players. There have been some fixes for that recently. No issues here anymore in my own initial testing.

I used Codec Tweak Tool to force the 64bit version of WMP for playback.
All the setting regarding the prefered splitters and decoders, and disabled *.mp4 in Media Foundation, were set identically between the 32 and 64 bit versions.
Upon opening several video files of different formats and extensions, including those problematic ones from before, the results were the same: x64 version VSFilter performed accurately, identical to its 32bit counterpart (here I am referring to the VSFilter mods that you attached for testing).
So, no issues found, I can definitely say that both 32bit and 64bit versions of VSFilter operated identically and properly. Well done.
