movie-subtitles-malware

Post by irontiger on Wed May 24, 2017 12:31 am

First of all I would like to thank everyone involved in the development of the K-Lite Codec Pack. In my opinion is the best program of its kind.

There is a new type of malware out there. Uses subtitles to infect and control a victim's computer. It has been reported that several programs such as VLC, Kodi, Popcorn Time and Stremio have these vunerabilities. (Although most recent updates have attempted to fix this issue.)

I would like to know if K-Lite is aware of this situation, and if it is also vulnerable to these problems?

No, as far as I know MPC-HC and the codec pack are not affected by this problem.

https://trac.mpc-hc.org/ticket/6169

Since K-Lite only uses either WMP and/or MPC-HC, this is the official response from them and a double assurance on what Admin has already stated above.

K-Lite can be used with several other players as well. The problem isn't in the codecs, but in the players themselves. A few players (like Kodi) which have automatic subtitle download functionality didn't do proper checks on the contents of the downloaded ZIP file.

I personally use MPC-HC, so I feel more rested after learning that this program is not vulnerable to these attacks.
Thank you very much for all your feedback.  Smile
