MPC-HC crashes on codec pack 1250 & 1255 on Windows 7 x64

Post by Xaq on Sun Nov 13, 2016 8:24 am

I waited for version 1255 so the bug may get fixed but in new version it is the same. I had no problem before version 1250 on the same system but from version 1250 windows crashes totally (even CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work). I always install the mega pack.
Today I checked MPC-HC version and surprisingly it was a nightly build (1.7.10.269 c1eba40) so I downloaded stable (1.7.10) version from its https://mpc-hc.org/downloads/ and problem fixed.
Hope this may help someone else.

Please consider packing stable release of MPC-HC in the next K-Lite codec pack.

Always report problems as soon as you get them! If it was a common problem it would have never been released, or have been fixed immediately. Never assume that others have the same problems.

Version 1.7.10.269 is very stable. In fact, more stable than 1.7.10.0. Your problem is probably related to another component, such as LAV Filters, which is newer than the one included with 1.7.10.

You are the only one who has reported a crash for 1255 (and 1250). Can you make a screenshot of the crash error? Or just mention which module is listed as the cause of the crash. And some details about the file(s) that are giving the problem.

As soon as I try to play a video (no matter which format) windows completely freezes and only a hard reset could be done. I opened task manager to see if there is a CPU consumption at the moment I try to open the file but there was no such a thing.
I'm using k-lite on a Lenovo E550 laptop with windows 7 64 bit. I have no problem with neither of mentioned versions over Windows 7 32 bit on my PC.

A freeze like that is often caused by a bad sector on the harddrive.
Right-click on your harddrive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking > enable the option for bad sector and perform the scan
It can take a few hours if you have a very large harddrive.

Another possibility is a bug in the graphics or sound driver.

Thanks. A bad sector has no chance since system works perfect with other softwares and this is not happening to a particular video, it happens for all kinds of video.
Driver bug has higher probability but I'm ok with other players like VLC, KMPlayer, etc. Also before the two last versions I had no problem with k-lite. Such a freezing happens due to something wrong in kernel mode like drivers as u said.
Currently I'm OK with installing stable release of MPC-HC.
Also I want to appreciate your work as one of your happy users for many years.

You should really do that harddrive scan. It only costs a little bit of time, and you'll know if the drive is in good condition.

The fact that other players work means nothing. It is possible that the bad sector contains data that belongs to one of the files from the pack. If it was a video file, the problem would likely only have happened with one specific file.

System crash with new update 1299

Post by Xaq on Mon Mar 13, 2017 8:10 pm

Hello

I have the same problem and when installing MPC-HC 1.7.11 stable release the problem disappears.
My question is why 1.7.11.13 nightly is embedded while there is a stable release available. Last time you replied this nightly version (the one embedded in previous k-lite) is more stable than the stable release. Is it true for this version again? Then why they name it nightly and there is a stable one?

Nightly builds are the versions in between the 'stable' releases. Stable releases are done periodically, once a significant amount of changes have been made, and there are no known big problems. The quality of the nightly builds depends on what kind of changes have been made recently. Most changes are bug fixes and other improvements, so often the latest nightly build can be considered the best version available. Occasionally there might be a change that can potentially cause a regression.

The codec pack will always contain what we think is currently the best version available. If a problem is discovered, then we will quickly revert back to an older version if the problem can't be solved directly.

I am still curious what the exact cause of your problem is.

I'm curious too. What ever it is, it just happens with nightly builds.
I disagree about the definition of stable and nightly builds. Anyway thanks for your hard work.

Well, your situation is an exception, not something that is common. Have you tried version 13.0.0 yet?

Which security tools are you using? F-Secure and HitmanProAlert have some compatibility issues with MPC-HC.
