File associations and thumbnails not generated - Windows 10 Empty File associations and thumbnails not generated - Windows 10

Hi!

First of all thank you for the lovely K-Lite!

Issue:
File associations and thumbnails were not generated for me when installing the latest (12.3.5) standard codec pack on freshly installed Windows 10 Pro 64bit (newest stable version with all updates to date). I checked with some mkv and avi files. It shows the default Films&TV icon and no any side information in Windows Explorer.
Worked fine with my previous Windows 7 installation before.
Not really sure what other info i could provide, I didn't expect this problem to happen.

All replies and help are much appreciated!
Thank you!

With regards to file associations, installers are not able to create file associations the same way as in older versions of Windows. Windows 10 requires users to manually choose their preferred defaults. The codec pack uses some tricks to make your life easier. You should get a prompt when you double-click on a file asking which program you want to use. This trick only works if your user account is the same as used during installation.

In general you are now supposed to select your preferred applications through Windows settings. You can quickly access that through:
Codec Tweak Tool > File Associations

The codec pack adds details in Explorer for a few extra formats. Windows should do it by itself already for .avi (and a few other formats). I am not sure why it doesn't show that for you. Are you perhaps using a "N" version of Windows? That is a special version used sometimes in Europe and Korea, which doesn't include some multimedia things like Windows Media Player.

Thank you for the quick reply!
I set up file associations as you described it through Windows settings. It made the difference.
Regarding details in File Explorer, I have a normal version, not the N. By default, Explorer does not show any info. I checked view options and folder options, though. It looks like I can only see info if I change to content view or apply the details pane for the right side of Explorer.
At least this is what I have figured out by myself.

Yes, what Explorer shows depends on the View settings.

Thank you!
And I wanted to ask another question. Sorry, but it is off topic.
Windows 10, now with mkv support if I got it right, supports most of the popular formats. In general is it advisable to use its native support with its built-in app or still rather a codec pack like this with MPC-HC? And why.

Windows 10 does not have full support for mkv. It only supports a few common audio and video formats. It also doesn't have good support for all common subtitle formats. In my opinion the native apps are crap. They might be enough for causal users, but anyone serious about video playback uses advanced players like MPC-HC.
