(Solved) Can't play files that worked before update Empty (Solved) Can't play files that worked before update

Post by Randall Webster Thu Feb 11, 2016 7:28 am

Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium, with the most recent update to K-lite Codec Pack Full 11.9.0.

I was playing flv, mp4 and webm videos, and Ogg Vorbis sound files, without any difficulty until the update.
The files only crash Windows Media Player whenever I need an codec update, which is irritating.
Even the MPC is crashing.

In the Codec Tweak Tool, I tried the reset, and also General Fixes. I even tried to Restore my previous settings, but no luck.
I've generated a log file, which I hope is helpful:

Try disabling hardware acceleration in LAV Video Decoder. If that solves the problem, then you should update your graphics driver.

Otherwise do this:
1) Get nightly build of MPC-HC:
https://nightly.mpc-hc.org/
(grab the .7z file. You can extract that with WinRAR or 7-Zip)
2) Open the player and drag&drop a file onto it.
3) It will prompt about a crash report when it crashes. Allow it to submit the report.
4) It will then open a website with details about the crash. Copy the link of the website here.

Deactivated hardware acceleration in LAV Video. Downloaded nightly build "MPC-HC.1.7.10.101.x64.VS2015" 20 minutes ago. Extracted with 7-Zip.

Dragged an mp4 file that I know to be good and attemped to play. "MPC-HC has stopped working". Not able to generate crash report.

Can you try opening the file with the GraphStudioNet tool? If that shows a crash dialog, look for the "crashing module".

You can get 11.9.4 beta here:

Both x86 and 64-bit of GraphStudioNext crashing. Will uninstall, and clean registry with CCleaner, to re-install with Mega.

I'd like someone to walk me through this... is there an update that I'm missing?

Uninstalled with K-Lite uninstall, cleaned with CCleaner, installed Mega 11.9.0.0. I even ran the KLCP Update exe ("you are running the most recent version").

Same thing, again. Windows Media Player crashed. MPC-HC 64-bit crashed.

Installed VLC Media Player x86. Crashed on mp4; Ogg vorbis file played OK.

Most recent QuickTime player (7.7.9) plays mp4 files.

All those crashes are of the same type. A stackhash crash. Technically that means that Windows was unable to determine in which module the crash occurred. It is very unlikely the problem is because of a codec, certainly since you also had problem with VLC, which uses only its internal codecs. This type of crash is usually causes by something closer to the system, such as security tools or something else that hooks itself into other processes.

Did you recently install/update any security tools? For example EMET or a different virusscanner/firewall?

Try this solution:
Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Performance > Settings > Data Execution Prevention
In case DEP is enabled for all programs, try adding wmplayer.exe to the exclusion list.

I couldn't get in from the Control Panel; it kept crashing. Finally, I used Start button/Computer (right click).

I used ESET years ago, when a really nasty bug infiltrated from a Facebook game. I haven't run it since. Should I go into my registry and really dig ESET out?

That Explorer crash happens in ntdll.dll, which is a core component of Windows. You might have some damaged system files.

Here is how you can scan for errors:
Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
Right-click on it and "Run as administrator"
Execute this command: sfc /scannow

When it is done, and it has found error, then use this command to get a more readable log file:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log > c:\sfcdetails.txt

Also scan your filesystem for errors. Open Explorer, right-click on C:, go to Properties > Tools > Error checking.

That log entry for the Eset installer has todays date. If that is correct, then you should search the Registry for esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe. Maybe it is re-trying each boot.

I have found the ESET installer exe, and have deleted it. I was unable to locate entries in the registry.
CCleaner shows no ESET software installed.

Have you also done the filesystem scan? That can sometimes fix damaged files.

I recommend to also enable the "scan for bad sectors" option when doing the scan. It will take much longer to scan, but it will detect damaged spots on the drive and makes sure they are never used again. That can prevent serious problems such as the whole computer freezing.

Here is a copy of that gm.dls file from my Windows 7 system:

Here you can find instructions on how to replace your current file:

Replaced DLS file from your upload (thanks). Ran SFC scan again after. "Windows Resource Monitor did not find any integrity violations."

Does that Explorer crash still occur? If so, maybe also scan your RAM for error:

No Explorer crash, but Media Player problematic. Not only mp4, but Flash and WMV files not playing. "Windows Media Player has stopped playing."

Did a Chkdsk /r overnight, combined with shutting off Media Player in the Control Panel and rebooting.

First time: "WMP was closed improperly. As a result, all plugins..." 2nd time: "WMP has stopped playing." However, wma files play back OK.

Does playback work in Media Player Classic?

If only multimedia applications are unstable now, then try updating your AMD driver.

MP-HC x64: LAV Video Decoder and LAV Splitter open in taskbar, but "MPC-HC x64 has stopped working."

Need most recent driver for 512MB ATI AMD Radeon HD6370D Graphics (HP). Yes, it's an old driver. This is an HP Pavillion from Wal-Mart, model P6-2003w.
Couldn't even run the performance assessment, but the most recent one showed 4.5 (graphics was the low point there).

Open the settings of LAV Video decoder (shortcut in start menu). Disable hardware acceleration in case that is currently enabled,
