No subtitles on Windows 10

Post by Vasileff on Fri Jul 10, 2015 12:37 pm

Hi folks,

I've decided to give Windows 10 Pereview a try. Bad decision, I guess. So far everything works fine, except MP and MPC (both 64 bit version).
I'm able to play a movies on MP, but the subtitles doesn't show. VobSub is not even loading.
And while MP is able to play any video file, MPC hangs on "Opening..." (stopps responding) and eventually it just closes itself.

What I've tried:
Uninstalled K-Lite
Restarted the PC
Installed latest K-Lite Full codec pack
Restarted again
Read the FAQs - none of the given solutions worked for me

I've never had such problems while I was on Win 8.1 Pro. I read somewhere that K-Lite is Win 10 compatible, so it must be something else.
Any ideas? Neutral

The problem with MPC is most likely because of your current graphics driver. Some Windows 10 driver are very unstable. Get a new driver from the AMD/Intel/Nvidia website.

For Windows Media Player try:
Codec Tweak Tool > Media Foundation > disable for the relevant file extensions

I've just downloaded and installed the latest Win 10 nVidia driver, but MPC still stopps responding when opening a file.

This fixed the subtitles issue.

Which GPU and driver do you have?

This may solve the problem:
MPC options > Playback > Output > Enhanced Video Renderer
But it should work with the default setting. Hopefully better drivers will be available once Win10 goes RTM.

Which kind of files did you have problems with in WMP? Because Win10 is also supposed to support subtitles by itself now.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M with GeForce Windows 10 Driver ver. 353.30

After this, MPC doesn't hang, but only the audio track plays while the screen remains black.

Both .avi and .mkv
Subs are .srt

You could try updating to the latest preview build. 10166 was released yesterday.

Same solution also applies to Windows 7 and 8.1. Only difference is that those versions use Media Foundation for less formats. For example .mp4. Windows 10 now also uses Media Foundation for .mkv files.
