windows media player 12 not play .vob filles

main windows media player not play .vob filles
main PC: windows 8 x64 K-lite codec pack mega 1000

WMP on Windows 8 is only able to play DVDs when you install the Media Center add-on package from Microsoft.

You might be able to play .vob files if you rename them to .mpg. If your files are located in a DVD folder (VIDEO_TS), then you might also need to move them to a different location.

Other players do not have these limitations.

The limitations of WMP are not due to missing codecs. Microsoft has deliberately limited the functionality of the player.

I'm curious about why they would do that. Do they want less people to use their player?

maybe, it's a shame, windows media player would be sufficient for the average user

They want to force people to buy the Media Center add-on. They did not include DVD playback by default to reduce costs, as fewer and fewer people play DVDs on their computer.
